Mongol is the first part of a trilogy of films on the life of Genghis Khan by Russian director Sergei Bodrov. With that in mind, you shouldn't be surprised when the film ends suddenly with Genghis' rise to power, as two more films are expected in the next few years.
It is also a wise decision on behalf of Bodrov to make a trilogy considering that other attempts at condensing the Khan's life into a two or three hour slot have failed so miserably in the past (Howard Hughes/John Wayne's 1956 film the Conqueror being the most notable).

This first half starts with Genghis as a nine-year-old boy, then called Temujin (spelt Temudgin in the film's subtitles) as he sets off with his father to choose a bride from a rival tribe, the ... Read More:

A beautifully filmed story of exquisite tenderness.

Starting off in black and white, a student comes home to his grieving, aged mother and to bury his father who has died outside the village in which he was the teacher. The mother wants to have the body carried home although the son and the mayor of the village prefer to have the body brought in a vehicle. The story then moves into the past and transitions into colour showing how the mother, as a young and extraordinarily pretty but shy 18 year old girl, meets the teacher on his first arrival in the village.

I guess you would call it love at first sight, as she contrives to be close to him, walking past the school each day, standing by the road as he walks home, taking ... Read More:

God god I have never been so bored in my life! This film is utter tripe!

1080p quality is very good, but you can only look at the scenery for a while before nodding off.

Take your dog for a walk rather than waste your time with this film.

This is a beautiful film, deeply touching. A bachelor goes in search of a wife. This being China, he wants his wife to bring him status, and lies about his own status... this shallowness is wonderfully exposed when he ends up caring for a blind girl, he lies that he can give her work as a masseuse in his hotel. He has to call on his friends, and they painstakingly construct a massage-parlour in their disused steel-mill, and then pretend to be her customers - which results in some scenes I will never forget. The parlour is meant to be an intimate space, but instead it is sat in a huge warehouse, with an audience. The humour is gentle, coming from the silly and increasingly tenuous situation, and the charming, bumbling, out-of-their-depth but well-meaning ... Read More:
