Every once in a while a great director manages to produce a work of such unsurpassed greatness that it is destined to stand amongst the greats for all time. This is such a film.
The story is about a group of Koreans whose quest to return home from China is turned into an epic struggle for survival against overwhelming odds when they go to the aid of a Ming princess.
It differs from most asian action movies in two ways. The first is in the action. It is wonderfully filmed but in a realistic manner. None of the silly artsy wire work which seems to be so poupular these days.
The second is that the acting is exceptional. The characters are given both a sense of nobility and depth along with a flawed humanity.
In my opinion ... Read More:

Attack the Gas Station! is an effective show case for 4 young stars and goes some way to prove that the newly revitalised Korean cinema has a lot to offer. Anarchic, briskly staged and with some genuinely funny moments, it is a film which could be remade to good effect in the West (I can see Kevin Spacey as the beleagued station owner, for instance) although I doubt that all of the verve could be recaptured, for this is a young man's film, angry and alert to wider issues.

"If they move, kill them" is a running joke through the film as the number of hostages increases and, whether or not a deliberate reference to Peckinpah's Wild Bunch, its still funny.

The least convincing aspect of the film is the flashbacks. While useful ... Read More:

This is one of the most thought-provoking films I have ever seen. It is quite beautiful in its simplicity and provides a valuable insight into a gentle and unassuming relationship. I can't say much about the storyline as that would give too much away: the intrigue lies in the interpretation of what is happening between the two protagonists and their effect on their surroundings and others.

The acting is subtle and unpretentious. I particularly appreciated the silence which prevailed: you were drawn towards these two people and willing them to succeed and survive.

It's a fantastic ending. I won't go into detail as you need to watch this film yourself and come to your own conclusions. I'm still thinking about ... Read More:
