I was sent to bed when the serie was shown in France in 1967, 10 years old at the time, but I amazingly remembered Kenneth More, Eric Porter and Nyree Dawn Porter faces. My mother was absolutly taken by the show and had no time for a kid.
Just last year, in Oslo, I walked into a news stand and found a very cheap print of the book. I bought it...........and let it rest until this summer on my coffee table. I finally took it while on a 10 days hike in the austrian alps and couldn't let go of the book. Primarly because I realized the Forsyte, although english, were just like my family !! Very chilling, but yet, there are heaps of french Forsytes, have a read at Emile Zoal or Balzac !!
I suddenly had to have the DVD. I finally went ... Read More:

This adaptation of Anthony Trollope's Barchester novels seems to be best remembered now as the television serial that made the name of Alan Rickman. Certainly I suspect that many of the people who have picked up this DVD have done so because of the presence of its breakthrough star. Those who do will discover the charms of this serial stretch far beyond its breakthrough star who is just one member of an excellent cast.

You will not see his face anywhere on the packaging but Donald Pleasance plays the central role in the piece of Reverend Harding, a mild-mannered and fundamentally good man who gets caught up in a row about the administration of a Church-run hospital. He becomes a pawn in the machinations of those around him and begins to ... Read More:

I bought this set some time ago, but have just re-watched some of the plays and was again impressed with the high standard of acting and production. For example, the version of An Ideal Husband is so much better than the recent film of that name. The latter seems so shallow in comparison and made the mistake of re-writing Wilde's words.
If you like Oscar wilde's writing you'll enjoy this set.

Along with Lassie Come Home, Born Free is probably the gold standard of animal movies in terms, and there's a lotto like in this story of Joy Adamson and her gamekeeper husband trying to return the domesticated lioness Elsa to the wild: the lion cubs are cute, the Scope wildlife photography still impressive and John Barry's score especially beautiful (the famous Matt Munro song was added to the end titles after the film was already on release. Where it shows its age is when the humans take centre-stage. At times Virginia McKenna can be a bit too head girl of the hockey school as Joy Adamson for a modern audience - while the Adamsons' real-life relationship was so tempestuous they spent much of their lives apart (Travers recalled that during filming whenever ... Having just re-watched all 26 episodes I feel that this is one of the best TV series ever made. Years ago I read the series of Trollope novels that comprise the Pallisers' saga and think that this dramatization captures the novels superbly well. The acting is of the best: everyone is first class. Immense trouble was taken with the costumes. They don't make them like this anymore! Time is taken to develop the characters; no frenetic camera-work; no intrusive back-ground music to drown out what people are saying: sheer bliss.

Paul Gallico's charming little story "Thomasina" is turned into an equally lovely little Disney film from 1964 directed by Don Chaffey ("Greyfriars Bobby"). Veterinarian Andrew MacDhui (Patrick McGoohan) is a widower who is raising his young daughter Mary (Karen Dotrice) in Scotland in 1912. Andrew has no empathy for the townsfolk who love their pets and when Mary's beloved cat Thomasina is injured he quickly decides the animal should be killed. Mary is distraught and Andrew simply cannot understand why the logic of the situation is not clear to the girl. Mary and her friends prepare an elaborate funeral for Thomasina, at which point Lori MacGregor (Susan Hampshire) shows up. The children think she is a witch, but in truth she lives in the woods and nurses injured ... Read More:

After the disaster of Series 6, this is a valliant attempt to salvage something of this once brilliant program, and to tie up loose ends. The storylines are more believeable. But it sadly still lacks the Humour of the early series. Talented Susan Hampshire and Sandy Morton give their all as usual. And the others do the best they can. It is well worth watching, if only to give closure to a great Series.
