It made fashionista fools think that taking hard drugs was a nice activity and gave them kudos and brought in too many people too Edinburgh looking for that lifestyle. I have never managed it all the way through and think it is just an alternative advert for Britain for the naively trendy or people who misguided enough to think that the pathos and dark humor wasn't there to balance the story...great cast though and on the whole well acted but an overrated footnote to late 90's Britain

No, this is not a faithful adaptation, but it is a very good adaptation. As this is a Masterpiece Theatre production, there is an introduction and a conclusion that is included, but not part of the actual film. The conclusion explains why so much of the novel was left out and explains some important plot points of the novel that were excluded from the film. This includes the the "Paris scene" as one reviewer distressingly noted--which ties up the loose ends concerning Count Fosco. Noting that they wanted to make a 2 hour film, they did a superb job. And, really, this film would be more fun if you haven't read the book so please don't let that deter you if you haven't read the book. I cannot for the life of me understand all the 5 star reviews. This film comprises a rediculously unbelieveable script populated with unbelieveable, 2-dimensional, cliched characters and executed with heavy, wooden performances. Is this what happens when artistic folk conspire to create "gritty" and "real" drama. The total running time of nearly two and a half hours makes this ham-fisted effort almost unwatchable

Christ! At time this film can be horribly depressing....but is pebble-dashed with get moments of comedy (especially the scene in the restaurant)just as some bad news has been broken. It's bleak, odd and very touching. A story of 2 brothers who run a book shop. Wilber wants to kill himself most of the time whilst his brother does all the work. Romance blossoms with the arrival of a mother and her child as well as the supporting cast of oddballs and misunderstood people, including the rather hostile and dysfunctional suicide group. It's certainly not a laugh a minute film but it's a great drama and has plenty of dark, funny moments.
