It's an all time classic. I believe this is the only version of Pride and Prejudice that does the book justice. Jane Austen would be very proud. I love the strength that Lizzy shows. She always holds her own and is not afraid to speak her mind. She is highly intelligent and is a good example. Colin Firth plays his part so brilliantly. The complex relationship between these two is wonderful. The battle of wills. Then to watch it all come toghether in the end always brings a tear to my eye. I have not seen a movie yet that beats this. They don't make them like this anymore.

Sorry about the title but it seems so apt - "After it, therefore because of it". I first saw this series when first broadcast way back when and I remember it being brilliant. However I have, in similar fashion, bought other series and programs from my dim and distant past released on DVD and been bitterly disappointed when I watched them (testament to a fading memory or a desperate attempt to cling on to my childhood). One or two exceptions (Edge of Darkness and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy being most notable) kept my faith. So, I bought it, unwrapped it, placed it in my DVD player and instantly lost the next 4 hours of my life! It is quite simply the best British TV drama the BBC has ever produced! Forget period time pieces (yes, ladies, even Mr. ... Read More:

DVD : Intimacy [2001]
Much has been said already by other reviewers here, so I'll only add different points of view. I think this is an extra-ordinary cameo of a brief sexual affair between two stangers. If the sex scenes are controversial then I think it's because they are natural and realistic, contrasting with stylised sex in mainstream films. This is a beautiful, sensitive erotic story.

What makes it erotic is the compelling attraction between the two characters - this is done without words and is a strong point in the film, as Jay remarks on several occassions. Their encounters are the stuff of fantasies - anonymous sex. What is really refreshing from a woman's point of view is Jay's strength of feeling and tenderness in the role, performed brilliantly ... DVD : Heat of the Sun [1998] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
"Heat of the Sun" is one of those mystery period-pieces that I wanted to go on and on, and, alas, it ended too soon. One suspects that cost had something to do with its sudden demise, given the African settings and the exotic thirties' costumes.

"Heat of the Sun" is the perfect series to watch on a cold winter night. Trevor Eve makes an excellent Scotland-Yard-detective-in-exile and Susanna Harker is lovely as the young aviatrix. The mysteries are excellent, the characters are fascinating, the settings are magnificent, and--Oh happy day!--Diana Rigg is still on hand as presenter (in the PBS edition) to tell us about Colonial life in Kenya's "Happy Valley" and the notorious Muthaiga club.

"Mystery" simply isn't the same without ... Read More:

DVD : Adam Bede [1992] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
I thought the movie was extremely well-done and I enjoyed every bit of it.

I have not read the book, so I do not have that added perspective. I do think Adam Bede, the main character, is an upstanding moral fellow. I do not think he is so black and white as the editorial review suggests, that he cannot see shades of gray. He is concerned not only for his own well-being, but is also concerned for those he loves, as well. I did not take him to be so stuck in his moral absolutes, that he judged others unfairly.

Adam loves Hetty. Hetty is beautiful and aspires for something more than working in the village. On the back of the box and maybe in the book, she comes across as selfish and vain. In this movie, she comes across as wanting more ... Read More:

DVD : Surviving Picasso [1996] [1997]
I found this a highly dissapointing film in that it seemes to focus almost entirely on the misogynistic side of Picasso`s personality, and his selfish insensitivity towards others. While these aspects of Picasso no doubt existed, the film fails to portray a rounded depiction of the man or what drove him. This very one-dimentional and oblique angled view is no doubt due to the fact that the film is based on the memoires of his disillusioned wife, and I am reminded of the book written by Deborah Curtis about her husband the singer Ian Curtis, in which she whines on about the domestic reality of their relationship but offers virtually no insight into his art - which was surely the most interesting thing about him. The problem is that the relationships which these ... Read More:
