There's no doubt that this film is worthy of cult status, and to many this is one of those all-time-classics. For me though, it's a good film, but doesn't quite hit the mark as a great film.

Some elements of the film are beautifully done; the generic packaging of food products, the bleak urban feel, and the seemingly apathy to violence and death make for a great dystopian atmosphere. This means that although the film is filmed/set in the 1980's, it has a futuristic look to it, almost like Mad Max.

The dystopia is developed further as the main characters have little or no ambition, whenever someone discusses what they want from life it's never anything more than committing crime or becoming a `fry chef' in a fast food ... Read More:

DVD : Sid And Nancy [1986]
As a minor fan of Punk, this is one of the most disappointing films I've seen. Gary Oldham gives a laughably bad portrayal of Sid Vicious nothing like the real thing at all and the leading lady was quite poor in her role as Nancy. Overall the biggest problem this movie suffers from is that it has the patina of a cheap amateur film student project.

I recently watched "The Filth and the Fury," a documentary about the Pistols and their antics, and I found this flick much less engaging. I've never understood Sid and Nancy's parasitic *need* for each other, and this movie did nothing to enlighten me.

The performances and music make this a marginal "recommend", but not by much. Another nail in the coffin of the British Film industry during ... Read More:

I was looking forward to this film, being a fan of Michel Gondry, but was sorely disappointed. This is a half-finished Charlie Kaufman idea, padded out into a film by Gondry. My experience is, Gondry is a genius so long as he's either collaborating or not working in feature length. Science of Sleep is another of his directorial let-downs, wheras Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is wonderful. Don't let him steal over an hour of your life people! Get Spotless Mind instead and watch some real cohesive artwork.

One thing that stood out in this film was the treatment meted out to a felon which echoed the Rodney King beating by LAPD. There were several cops who attempted to batter him to the ground. I found it implausible, yet the King incident gave it a strange authenticity.

Another small criticism was the chase through the restaurant. Penn had been in a car and High Top on a bike and the time it took Duvall to catch them up(on foot, or had he hitched a lift using his police authority) must've been through time lapse photography. Having said that the
relationships between all the players provided for some entertaining realism.

DVD : They Live [1989]
The premise which underpins this cult classic is "the ultra rich and well-healed have such contempt and disregard for everyone else, they must be from another planet". And in this strange little offering from the legendary John Carpenter, that's exactly what's going on.

If you think of the havoc that globalisation has wreaked, and the arrogant, destructive world domination sought by the Neoconservatives, you often wonder where this school of thought actually developed. (Although we've also cooked up Nazism during our patchy record as custodians of Planet Earth, so go figure).

This film proposes that the world is run by very creepy humanoids from another planet, who travel the universe making money, whilst having a total contempt for the indigenous ... Read More:

Best remembered (if at all) as the film that comprehensively destroyed Alex Cox’s mainstream career, it’s hard to see what caused such vitriolic offense at the time. Cox and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer’s take on the unbalanced self-deceiving ‘idealist’ mercenary William Walker’s intervention in Nicaragua to protect Cornelius Vanderbilt’s financial interests there, setting off a century of disastrous American interference, is not particularly subtle, but then William Walker wasn’t exactly a subtle man (“Clearly this is no ordinary asshole,” judges one of the more astute locals). With a visual style clearly inspired by spaghetti westerns and Sam Peckinpah, a contradictory narration - what you hear isn’t what you see, ... Read More:

This movie - along with "10 to Midnight", "The Evil that Men do" and the first two "Death Wish" films - ranks high as one of Bronson's best films. Surely, it all has been seen before, but never as good as here. Bronson plays hardball - in his cool manner, as always - but this one is quite different as his previous films. Of course it has the vigilante theme, but Bronson is more cynical than ever. The ending of the film is one of the best I have ever seen.
