I didn't expect a lot from this tale but was pleasantly suprised to find that this is one of the best old school Doctor Who tales I have viewed in some time. Tom Baker is excellent as The Doctor and comes out of the starting blocks with a fully formed character right from the start.

I would reccomend this one to fans of the new series who would like to check out the old stuff as the feel is quite similar in tone. We have Sarah Jane Smith on her own quest much like the modern Sarah Jane Adventures and the Doctor's eccentric behaviour after his regeneration reminded me a lot of David Tennant's performance in 'The Christmas Invasion'. Harry is introduced to the team (yay) and the Brig is left behind as the doctor leaves earth at the ... Read More:

Doctor Who - The Movie [1996] [1963] This is perhaps one of the most underated DVD's in the whole Doctor Who series both new and classic. The main problem is the bad guy or more specifically the actor who portrays him, Eric Roberts is a great bad guy in lots of B'Movies but just wasn't right for this film (his choice was forced on the writers/director due to pressure from the american backers). On the whole though the film is a great little jaunt, the interior of the TARDIS is fantastic and McGann plays the role fantastically. idea for the future (McCoy, McGann, Eccleston and Tennant) The Four Doctors

Basically the series was really on it's knees by now! The worst ever Doctor, the most juvenile companions and some of the lowest budgeted episodes conspired to bring about the end!
The special FX and sets, throughout the McCoy era, had degraded to a level that was far, far below the work seen as far back in the Pertwee (early 70's) era. Seriously, it reminds at times of BBC2's whimsical, The Adventure Game!
People tend to be more polarised about Sylvester McCoy's take as the Time Lord than any of the other actors. You'll either love him or hate him!
Nothing personal aginst the man, he's a nice guy in interviews & I am sure he tried his best but sorry, not for me! To be fair, he couldn't really be blamed for BBC's fiscal problems back then, and the rot ... Read More:

After having watched most of the BBC's period dramas, I still think that 'Tom Jones' is the best of them all. The original novel is difficult to dramatise but the writers here did a fantastic job. Henry Fielding is an intrusive narrator in the book and I found the decision to include him as a featured character in the dramatisation to be quite convincing. The acting is superb throughout. With the possible exception of Samantha Morton as Sophia Western, who comes across as rather bland, the cast is a joy to watch. Some of the supporting characters could not be better cast, just take a look at Brian Blessed who makes a perfect Squire Western (rotten teeth, swearing and all). I always found the Tom Jones of Fielding's novel one of the most likeable characters in all English fiction ... Read More:

I can confidently say that this is the best story of the Sylvester McCoy era from Doctor Who. Now that may sound like praise but is akin to saying that bubonic plague is my favourite disease from a choice of 15 life threatening ailments.
McCoy's era really did bring the whole Doctor Who world to it's knees, despite however many rose tinted spectacles some fans might put on. The scripts were shoddy, confusing and self congratulatory, McCoy was not a strong enough actor to convey the mystery of the Dcotor and Sophie Aldred is possibly the most over-rated Doctor Who companion in the whole history of the programme. She just cannot act, and bigging up this story simply because she flashes her knickers and suspenders at the camera goes to show how desperate some fans are. The ... Read More:

Having watched this recently for the first time in about 15 years, I realised how dismal it always was. It was possibly one of the most self-referential adventures of the entire series. The televised reference to the "new 1960's science fiction series Do'.." set a new low. It's difficult to sit through this without squirming from embarrassment, but then, most of the McCoy stories WERE like that, and became all the more so with desperate attempts introduce a new sense of "mystery" to the Doctor. As the Dalek gravitated up the staircase after him, I couldn't help but think "Yes, make him regenerate now!"

Here they are - the episodes that the BBC was able to obtain copies of from Tom, Dick and Harry. Episodes that they had previously chucked in the bin during the 1970's, as despite being the dominant force in the British TV industry, they couldn't foresee the video tape sales market, which was then less than ten years away!

So four stars for the episodes on this DVD collection, 1,000 stars to the collectors who saved copies of them.

Zero stars to the BBC numpties who binned both these episodes and over 100 others that unfortunately have never been recovered.

Survival is one of the better Sylvester McCoy stories of his entire era & of this season. It's more coherent than Ghostlight, has more energy than Battlefield but not quite as good as Fenric.
It's very easy to knock it for not being a fitting end to the classic run of Dr Who but then it was never intended to be anything more than a story which was screened last in a season.
It's a slightly better story for Ace than the Doctor. She is returned to her roots and looks for her friends. A mystery involving disappearances linked to black cats takes the Doctor and Ace to a dying planet where they meet Cheetah people and the Master.
On the whole the themes of survival and evolution are well developed and explored. It fits Ace's character that she would be tempted by the possibility ... Read More:

DVD : Doctor Who - Silver Nemesis (The Extended Version) [1988] [1963]
It's hard to believe that "Silver Nemesis" got less than 5 stars average rating. This is an exceptionally good show, especially when you consider that it comes from the Sylvester McCoy era, where most shows were real stinkers! The lovely and attractive Ace is certainly a welcome addition, and the contrasting dialog between her and the Silver Nemesis sent chills up my spine. When Ace says, "Catch you later" to the Silver Nemesis, it's both funny and scary because we know Ace didn't know what to say. If you were faced with the Silver Nemesis you wouldn't know what to say either. It gives us a sense that these characters are very much out of time from each other, and have come together to do what they are suppose to do. Not everyone enjoys this form of entertainment, but don't shoot it down just because you don't get ... Read More:
