Emmanuelle , released in 1974 was the first soft core porn movie to achieve major box office success ,and this after the French government tried to have it banned. With utter predictability this ensured the film was an overnight success in it's native France , and it also went on to triumph in the USA where it was marketed as an art house movie which is a bit like marketing "Monty Python And The Holy Grail" as an historical movie , but there you go. Based on the controversial 1957 novel "Emmanuelle-The Joys Of A Woman " by Emmanuelle Arsan this is a film with some arresting erotic scenes but one which overall takes itself far too seriously . Superb production of the classic D.H.Lawrence novel. Sylvia Kristel smoulders in the role, and, as with the Emmanuelle films, she brings a sophisticated class, and sensual intensity to the sexual core of the storyline. Beautiful countryside, a strong cast, rich and lush settings, and burning passion !! The stunning Sylvia Kristel was the perfect choice for the role in this excellent film, which can be enjoyed on many levels.

The movie itself does not pretend to be a high achievment in cinematography. For many people (among those who cared to watch it) it seems boring. Well, I like it - and nothing more. Alas, this DVD is the exact copy of the American version (I checked the size of files in bytes - 100% same!). It is in NTSC in fact (not PAL as stated in the description!). The menu is not interactive, and chapter menu does not exist at all. I guess, it was derived from PAL DVD (I might be wrong though), hence the picture is not that good. Also, the analogue master used for this edition was not the best possible, I believe. In the end, I have to find a 1.66:1 aspect ratio version, because all those 4:3 trimmed versions cut the beautiful legs of Teri Tordai ... Read More:

As a fan of the original 1965 HBO series "Get Smart",i bought this first film version from 1980.I already had the second film "Get Smart again",from 1989.The initial reaction i had while watching was to compare it to Sean Connery's last bond picture "Never say never again".That bond film was not "official" and didn't have the old Bond music, a different "M", etc.This film looks the same,the old music has gone,Barbara Feldon who played agent 99 has gone,the old "control" has gone, even Smarts trade mark car has gone.All these returned in the next film "get Smart again".Don Adams who played Maxwell Smart still looks in good shape and the film is still amusing in parts but overall it's a let down.The best part is a chase scene through Universal studios ... Be warned this film has been so heavily hacked apart that it is at times difficult to follow the plot. Every scene with either sex or violence has been heavily edited. Cutting not only the sex and violence but some of the story as well. The whole film is dark and poorly converted. Overall this is the poorest production quality DVD I have every had the misfortune to buy.

I was only 16 when I first saw this movie & my parents were asleep to know what I saw.Since then I have always been captured with the story line that is told & acted so good. D.H. Lawrence left a legacy that is timeless.For me the picture & sound is perfect.The assembled cast is the best there is & Kristel is still beautiful as ever as in Emmanualla I dont understand some reveiwers refering to that other movie when we are talking about the Lady Chatterly's Lover.There is a lot a nakedness & tyst in the movie but its all exposed in a very cinematic manner & its not crude porn.I personally would not condone adultry between spouses just because the husband is no longer able to do "it" but this is a very old tale & Iam sure some people ...
