Waking The Dead - Series 4 [2001]

Contemporary television drama at its best, although I have not seen all the seasons I feel certain this must be the best, if they come any better than this, WOW.

There is a wonderful atmosphere maintained throughout the season, every complex plot is a well acted and a stunning success, even if there are occasional unlikely coincidences, etc

Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve) and psychologist and profiler Grace Foley (Sue Johnson) both well into middle age lead the very much younger team of DI Jordan (Wil Johnson), DS Mel Silver (Claire Goose) and pathologist /forensic scientist Frankie Wharton (Holly Aird).
What makes it stand out against other series ... Read More:

This spellbinding made for TV film (starring Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer) is based on J. P. Gallagher's book "The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican", the true life story of Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty, who saved roughly 4000 Jews and Allied POWs from Nazi occupied Rome.

In 1943 O'Flaherty organises an enormous network of civilians, priests and nuns to save Jewish refugees and Allied POWs from the Nazis, hiding them in flats convents and churches in Rome to save them from the GeStaPo and Colonel Kappler. Kappler decides to have a white line drawn around the Vatican and check those entering and leaving but with many disguises O'Flaherty manages to slip the net and escape assassination attempts on his life.

Of 9,700 Jews in Rome, ... Read More:

A lot more than just a rape scene

I remember seeing Gordon Williams on the South Bank show discussing his writing method. Straw dogs or siege of Trenchers farm has been his most successful book. He was a journalist and has produced 20 novels. When asked how he makes ends meet he said " I type faster" in his strong Scottish accent. I have always thought that was a good attitude towards work, do more of it. Unfortunately his fast typing has not brought him such success as Straw dogs.

It only seems to be famous for the rape scene even now over 37 years later when we have had to endue all sorts of sex scenes in films.

It is a pity that the critics only concentrate on that aspect of the film. It reminded me of The Wicker Man in the opening ... Read More:

I may be a bit slow but I didn't understand this film. Dustin Hoffman is in my eyes a brilliant actor and one of his films should be in every movie collection, however I got the feeling there was something missing from this - Hoffman's character is slow to get any adrenaline flowing in my veins and the only credible person I feel is actually Susan George portraying her character of the tormented wife perfectly. However I am unsure why this film was banned for such a long time as I have seen worse violence in other films before this was made. The rape scene is rather confusing but is no where near as graphic as in something like 'Scum.' I would recommend a watch but just one.

This last appearance of inspector Morse in a criminal case that (a bit of a spoiler here) that partly involves the good man himself, is both beautiful and terribly depressing, as the good inspector did not survive that case. As the story progresses, we understand that nothing is at it seems, and that there is hardly someone (except for Lewis) who has not been affected by the life and death of the victim Yvonne Harrison. Perhaps, it is not so much a whodunnit than a whydunnit, as the spectator may find that being murdered sometimes happened for a good, or at least a decent reason! Morse is true to himself, with his nostalgic makeup and a thing for quoting poetry, not to mention his irritating (to those who cannot keep up with his brilliant detective mind) way of being far ahead everybody. Literary anoraks usually have difficulty in coping with movie adapations of their favourite books, failing to understand that their mental view of the original will not survive the change of medium and the consequent creation of a new art form. A book as iconic as Joyce's Ulysses will never be faithfully 'reproduced' on screen to the satisfaction of such critics.

In fact Joseph Strick's 1967 film not only sees the successful transition of Joyce's book into a new medium (within the 'new wave' tradition popular with film makers at the time) but has also created a work that remains highly relevant to the 21st century viewer. Strick actually filmed in black and white and in 'modern dress' ( for the time) for budgetary rather than aesthetic reasons.

If there is something I connect to the 80's more than anything it's movies like this one. It came at the shivering end of the decade, when the cold war was nearly over. But it shows a technique honed through literally dozens of cold war action movies. A genre of it's own.

The Russian KGB-agent Nikolai (Dolph Lundgren) is sent to Africa to kill a native revolutionary. However he is betrayed by his own people and instead befriends the man he was to kill. Soon he exacts his vengeance on his deceitful commanders.

Dolph Lundgren is known from cold war epics like Rocky IV and Pentathlon. It seems his blonde Swedish looks are very Russian in the eyes of the American audience. Also his garbled accent might be appropriate as a substitute for real Russian. Here he shoots, explodes and slices ... Read More:
