Mongol is the first part of a trilogy of films on the life of Genghis Khan by Russian director Sergei Bodrov. With that in mind, you shouldn't be surprised when the film ends suddenly with Genghis' rise to power, as two more films are expected in the next few years.
It is also a wise decision on behalf of Bodrov to make a trilogy considering that other attempts at condensing the Khan's life into a two or three hour slot have failed so miserably in the past (Howard Hughes/John Wayne's 1956 film the Conqueror being the most notable).

This first half starts with Genghis as a nine-year-old boy, then called Temujin (spelt Temudgin in the film's subtitles) as he sets off with his father to choose a bride from a rival tribe, the ... Read More:

When I first saw ICHI THE KILLER it was the 15-minutes-cut-out German DVD version, it didn't leave an impression on me. Just another pointless film. But after seeing the Unrated US version I must say, this movie has an impact. Although excessively violent and sadistic (all though the over-the-top gore cannot be taken seriously) it is quite entertaining and can well live up to the other MIIKE films. Tadanobu Asano (Kakihara) plays a well enough sado-masochistic baddie (quite a character!) whom you will remember well afterwards! I must say this is one of the most groundbreaking films within the last decade, although not for all tastes. On the negative side: I got the impression Miike hates women, as they are constantly being beaten and tortured throughout ... Read More:

I have watched this film SO many times cinema/at home that i'm staggered that it continues to give me goosepimples at every viewing. Look out for the scenes in the gambing dens, paddy fields and the closing credits ... marvellous. i love it.

Plot is interesting, if rather unbelievable. Costumes are fantastic, in fact I concentrated more on the costumes than the action.

The fight scenes are a disappointment, you don't get to see many martial skills - the shaky camera and tendency to close-up focus on peoples faces sees to that.

If you like crazy action flicks like Versus or Kurosawa's films, be warned that this may not be for you.

God god I have never been so bored in my life! This film is utter tripe!

1080p quality is very good, but you can only look at the scenery for a while before nodding off.

Take your dog for a walk rather than waste your time with this film.

This is one of the few times reviews and straplines have not lied when they say "You will never have seen anything like this". This film is truly original. I admit that maybe the fact there are five interlinking stories is similar to Magnolia, The Player and Pulp Fiction, but the content of these stories is so insane you would only ever encounter them in an arthouse short film. This film however has far more budget and talent than that.

You can enjoy this film purely for visual reasons. Each shot is beautifully sculpted and the sets are amazing. Asano's house is probably the visual highlight, at times sophisticated and at times garish, but never less than eyecatching.

The acting talent on display is also top level. Asano of course ... Read More:

I bought this film with great anticipation, having seen a clip of the sword fights in the first scene. The photography and the fight co-ordination were so authentic and beautiful. The rest of the script however is amateurish. Except his other works say otherwise, I find absolutely no reason for the hype around the director of this film. The plot is meaningless, the characters remain shallow. Everyone in the film seems deluded. Plotlines are started and killed off without explanation. There is for example the new deputy commander who seems to be plotting something with his bullish atitude, but he suddenly has no part in the film. Is the story about the affair between Kano and Taisho? Taisho barely features in the film! Is Kano gay or not? Does he have a plan or is ... Read More:

I still don^t understand the title.? I expected it to be set in a cafe called Cafe Lumiere. Young adults living in Tokyo today. A life their older, more traditional parents just don^t understand. You certainly got to see the rail and bus public transport system there. If you like Japanese films then it is worth watching. It^s not one of the best films ever, but its^s a good insight into modern Tokyo.
