Apart from the actual picture and audio quality not being wonderful on this DVD, the actual content, which is what it is here for, is awesome. Bernstein gets slated a lot for being too harsh on people, or a bully, nothing could be further from the truth. I work in this field full time and Bernstein's approach can defiantly be termed "old school" but not too harsh by any means. As for Jose Carreras being bullied by Bernstein? Hardly. Carreras didn't do his homework, plain and simple, the fact that "Something's coming" had to have take after take and Jose was still unaware that he was miles ahead of the orchestra is proof if proof were needed. Don't get me wrong, I love Carreras, he was just totally unprepared for what was expected of him.

This is a truly beautiful production with a traditional setting. Casilly is a good Tannhauser. His opening aria, sung in the venusberg, is satisfactory, if lacking in power. Troyanos, as Venus, is very good indeed. Elizabeth is superb but it is the scenery and production values generally. This Paris edition of Tannhauser is everything I want it to be and doesn't disappoint. The ballet at the opening of the opera is fantastic, really first rate stuff. Don't hesitate to buy it.

There's no doubt that the lead female voices in this production are all in total command of their roles, but this DVD will probably appeal most to people who enjoy DVDs of concert works, because this `staging' is presented as a concert performance in fancy dress. The picture also has technical problems (numerous jumps and missing English surtitles), but is chiefly irritating for its endless close-ups on individual singers (sometimes when other people are singing), which detract from any sense of being in the theatre or watching a staged show with action. However, this isn't all Brian Large's fault--the Met production is static in a manner befitting a cast whose members are generally of great vocal and physical magnitude. They invariably sing to the audience, facing forward, ... Read More:

Dating from 1980, this exquisitely beautiful recording of Mozart's 1791 opera seria, La Clemenza di Tito, was staged and directed by the legendary Jean-Pierre Ponnelle in a number of ancient Roman ruins: the Forum, the Baths of Caracalla and Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli. Reflecting the studied artificiality of the genre, costumes are based on court dress of the late 18th century and acting is mannered verging on melodramatic, rather than naturalistic (which I take to be a nod to Classical stage conventions and which works perfectly in this production).

The plot involves political power-plays, love, vengeance and a failed assassination attempt against the Emperor (initiated by the daughter of the usurped former Caesar, Vitellia - played with magisterial authority by ... Read More:
