The action of Hayao Miyazaki's latest animated fantasy takes place in an undetermined place and age, though it looks like the late 19th century (allowing for a number of anachronistic details) in a Central European kingdom (the Austro Hungarian empire of the time seems the country where the action takes place, and the book happens in a place called Ingary, though the kingdom in the movie has a large port by the sea, which the Austro Hungarian empire didn't). The story starts with a young woman called Sophie working in a hat factory who is suddenly turned into a 90 year woman through a curse by some witch. She then tries to meet the wizard Howl, to see if he can help her. As it later turns out, Howl faces some curses of its own. The story soon ... Read More:

My 7 & 10 year olds love this and watch it lots. I was pleasantly surprised as it is not the usual box office, Disney wonder. I first heard of it when Jonathon Ross raved about it. He was right - the animation is great and the story is quite interesting (to me) and fascinating (to my children). Nice to see eastern cartoons that are not just kungfu rubbish, but are well thought-out.

I disagree with the review written by the previous reviewer. I have a lot of Japanese films from different eras. If you like quirky Japanese films, you will love this. I've probably seen every film that Tadanobu Asano has starred in and this is one of the best.

One of the things I enjoy most about Japanese cinema is the fact that they can throw out some really wild and unpredictable movies. Of course they can also cannibalize themselves to the point of making whatever was original seem boring. However it does seem that there is always someone over there that can deliver a movie that will surprise you. In the case of Party 7 it's writer/ director Katshuhito Ishi, who has managed to incorporate some of the most weirdest things. The majority of the movie is set within a room in the Hotel New Mexico, with the tale of seven people, and a suitcase of cash, converging in a seedy hotel (thoughtfully equipped with a peeping room), has a lot of comedic potential, but somehow turns a lengthy misfire. It's unfortunate too, since the base ... Read More:
