I was very disappointed. Admittedly the filming was very good, but I was expecting much more. In future I will stick with grand opera. Am I wrong but did not Domingo have a famous aria to sing in Pagliacci? Where was it?

This 1974 film version of Strauss' opera is a dream come true as far as being released on DVD. It is probably the best version there is, with all roles being ideally cast. Stratas will leave you cold - she is great singer and a fantastic actress.

A wonderful Traviata. Stratas and Domingo perfect for their parts. It can be watched with pleasure any number of times. The final scene was unbearably touching, in contrast with the rich animation and activity of the first Act.

I am no fan of studio-shot 'films' of operas. There is no substitute for the sound of the singers' feet on the boards, the muffled shifting of scenery in the background, the interaction (good or bad) with the audience which a live stage production provides. I approached this DVD warily, therefore, although the cast was too mouth watering to pass it up altogether.

I was wonderfully surprised. It is by far the best studio opera I have yet seen, thanks in great part to the brilliant (and sadly mourned) influence of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle directing what was to be his final work.

It is thanks, also, to a wonderful cast of singers, whom we now know as veterans, but then in their prime (the film was shot in 1988). Edita Gruberova ... Read More:

DVD : The Ghosts Of Versailles
For all who love opera and all who hate it - this modern English language (hooray!) opera combines some cheeky treatment of hidebound classical opera with real drama. We are all familiar with the background - Marie Antoinette & Co. after the revolution, very definitely dead. But not at rest. Throughout this refreshing performance the ghosts of Versailles become flesh & blood characters and you are caught up in the inner turmoils of these forgotten people. An fascinating approach to this turning point in modern history. Wonderful music, singing, costumes & sets, lighthearted touches along the way and the singers clearly had a ball! The Ghosts of Versailles sweeps opera out of the 19th century straight into the 21st. Highly recommended.

So I'm a new opera fan and I have a large collection of CDs, but I have never been to a live one.
This DVD was the first opera I bought and now I can say it is definately my favourite. Firstly, I love Jose Carreras and he is my favourite tenor. He may not have the technical brilliance of a Pavarotti but his phrasing and emotion come through in every song.
Secondly, I agree that the scene set in the Latin Quarter was overdone but it was still fun and enjoyable. As the opera progresses to the sadder and more emotional parts, Puccini is a magician! (which he has been critisised for!)

This Opera is truly enchanting and the performances are first rate
