These comedies rely on the juxtaposition and bringing together within close family circles of wildly differing points of view about how life should be led. Robert de Nero's character is the control-freak, tense, quiet, family man. He's an ex-CIA agent and he's never really going to like whoever his daughter (Teri Polo) decides to marry. She wants to marry Ben Stiller. The problem is that Stiller's father (Dustin Hoffman) is a laid-back house-husband and his mother (Barbra Streisand) is a sex-therapist for the over-60s.

As other reviewers have written, this set up allows for some genuine masterly comic situations that will have you screaming out loud with laughter on first viewing. But this kind of comedy relies largely on the factor ... Read More:

Its difficult to quantify fulfilling ambition. The mixture of emotions that one feels when one finally gets their hands on something they've been after for years. A strange brew of euphoria, happiness and satisfaction, yet there is also a strange feeling of emptiness that a long quest has finished.

This is how I feel about finally getting all of Northern Exposure on DVD. I remember searching Season 1 out and being thrilled that season 2 was also already available. I then waited with baited breath each 6 months as all of them one by one were released (with deleted scenes!). I have received part of my life back. A part which at the time during younger, more innocent years was important. I now remember why.

I'm overjoyed that ... Read More:

First of all, I haven't seen "Meet the Parents" so I had no preconceived ideas about what to expect ... other than the fact that I tend to like Robert de Niro films.

The obvious stars in this film were Streisand, Hoffman and de Niro. Stiller just seemed like someone who'd gatecrashed a party and did very little of note throughout the film. Anyone could have played the part.

The plot was as you'd expect from a mainstream family comedy ... just a one-gag situation (ex CIA meets hippies) with a few additional scenes thrown in to get the laughs. It really did seem as though someone had a few jokes and simply wove them into the script as several were underplayed (the bathroom privacy scene, as noted in another review) or the "long ... Despite this being the fifth series of NX, there are no signs of contempt or staleness creeping in. This marvellous series continues to charm us with excellent and unusual plotlines, brilliant acting and breathtaking scenery. If you're a fan, then you'll already know this, if you aren't, I suggest that you shell out a tenner for series one, then collect them all in sequence.

I for one can't wait to add series six to my collection as well. This is the only show I've gone to such lengths to watch again so many years after it was originally aired. It hasn't dated a single bit, I'm elated that they've all been released to DVD.

No expense seems to have been spared to film around the world in exotic - if faux - locations (Namibia for Ethiopia, Thailand for Cambodia, Canada - less exotically - for the Caucasas and - totally implausibly - for the UK) which were then brilliantly enhanced by computer technology. The director claims that he aspired to making a film like 'Doctor Zhivago' - a love story set against a wider panorama of spectacular world events. This film fails miserably on both counts.
The supposed attraction between the two individually attractive stars totally fails to gel. Enough said about the love story.
As a portrayal of humanitarian work, the film was a horrible embarrassment to the agencies directly named or implied. It is cringingly inaccurate ... Read More:

There are some hilarious moments in this film which a lot of people will be able to relate to - the anxiety that stems from meeting their girlfriend's parents for the first time. The story goes along at a gentle pace and if you're expecting the kind of heavy-handed gangster type action from Robert de Niro that often accompanies him in a film, you'll be disappointed. Here he plays a woman's father who is suspicious of her boyfriend and very protective and possessive of his child, but who can nevertheless be reasoned with - eventually! Ben Stiller puts in a fine performance as the nervous and accident prone boyfriend of de Niro's daughter.

This is a very enjoyable light film, part of whose appeal is the entertaining performances it draws from Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, who play off each other very amusingly. It's a feel-good film with a happy ending, but also with enough genuinely witty lines and entertaining scenarios to make it more than just pleasant pap you talk through ...it holds the interest and has few surprises along the way. I've seen it a couple of times and - the test of a good film - it holds up on a second or third viewing. Recommended. The sequel, 'Meet the Fockers' is equally good, with the added advantage of very enjoyable over-the-top performances form Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand.

A simple film, a thriller indeed. It works because the simple violence and menace is wrapped up in a complex and yet simple story about a divorced mother, the custody of a child, the remarrying of the mother and the brilliant newcomer who was accepted at once without any inquiry about who he was in this small community. The conflict between the father and the stepfather with the son in between seems natural and it even makes the police be sloppy about what it is supposed to do. There is of course no real suspense since we know who the criminal is and what the end is going to be. The punch line is directed at the police. The chief of police of this small community is just sorry though he voluntarily neglected simple facts and evidence. Amazing how in our modern societies ... Read More:
