Everyone had gone on about this film for years telling me how brilliant it was so I decided I'd beter watch it! I have to say I have seen better films involving dance or someone coming from a bad background and finally 'making it'. It was a good experience and the music was great but I'd much rather watch something like 'Center Stage' or even the second 'Dirty Dancing' again and again than this more than once.

We have to hope some dvd company like Criterion will restore the masterful performances of Alastair Sim to their full glory. He deserves that much.

The transfers in this collection are nothing special, and as for Extras, forget about it: don't even go looking for trailers. This box set is only worth buying at a sale price, not full price.

FOLLY TO BE WISE, to pick a title, is an exquisite ensemble piece. You'll see such wondrous sights as a three-shot covering three awesome screen and theatrical chatacter actors: Miles Malleson, Martita Hunt & Alastair Sim.
Miles Malleson practically cornered the market in bumbling and a-couple-of-shorts-over-the-odds British eccentrics. Hammer Films even brought him in to ... Read More:

Yes, this is a great comedy movie with endless gags played with immeasurable talent by the finest comedy actors of the time. It zips along merrily, almost exhaustingly at first but sags a little bit in the second half. Don't worry, it comes to life again. I was only a kid when I saw this at the movies and it left me worn out from laughing and has stuck with me ever since; I always have to have a copy handy for a boost.
But, even as a child, I knew this movie had done something else, it had captured a zeitgeist (I didn't know that word then). You are looking at Southern California before all the grey arrived. Much of the desert scenery in the movie is now tract housing, the cars are now bland and the people are out shopping.
How could you ... Read More:

"Oh, hard cheese, old chap!"

School for Scoundrels, that cheery, malicious comedy of one-upmanship, was based on Stephen Potter's classic of underhanded winning, Gamesmanship - Or How To Win Without Really Cheating, and its follow-up, Lifemanship. (Potter wrote several others, too.) What is lifemanship? "Well, gentlemen," says the avuncular head of school played by Alastair Sim to a new class, "lifemanship is the science of being one up on your opponents at all times. It's the art of making him feel that somewhere, some how, he's become less that you. He who is not one up, is one down."

Getting ready to sign up for the courses is Henry Palfrey (Ian Carmichael), so nice, so pleasant, so helpful that he usually finds himself either ... Read More:

Would be on most people's top 50 British films ever made list. It is way up there on entertainment value, and as a critique of 1950s life at work it is as good as a documentary. Very astute, very cleverly plotted, magnificently played, this is a film that seems to get even better with age, possibly because most of the practices satirised here are nostalgic memories now, however damaging they were. It takes you back to a day when jobs seemed safe for life, and even being sacked for incompetence was fairly rare if you belonged to one of the big unions. That the unions remained really powerful for another twenty years after this very critical film was made shows just how strong they were - Oh how things have changed! To be fair, this film attacks both sides, showing ... Read More:

The Green Man is a super black comedy. Eveything about this movie is great. Full of the superstars of their day. Real proper actings who can make people laugh. See a young George Cole, Alastair Sim and Terry Thomas.

The story line is good, a real story with some very funny sections. Well infact the whole film is very funny.

A great buy.

These splendid DVDs feature films from Terry's 'golden age' when he was at the peak of his powers and working with a fine ensemble of British character actors. Not only are the films (which here are good quality prints) very funny in their own right (with some sharp little satires about British life, and class, during the postwar era) but also T-T is hilarious as a succession of rascals, rogues and snobbish shirkers. If you love British comedy you'll adore this set.

It's Enter the Dragon + Dragon the Bruce Lee Story done with ping pong.
It's OK, plenty of in jokes to those who know the sorce material. Worth a rewatch maybe but it's not going to be in your top 5 comedies.

I sat down with great anticipation to watch this film. I was hoping for a 'Brideshead Revisited' experience, but it was more like 'Please Sir!' Lucky Jim is one of my all-time favourite books - and my kids' too. The film does not do justice to the book in any way; perhaps the time is right for someone to attempt a proper dramatisation of the book, with its subtle portrayal of character, its dry humour, its incomparable wit. Don't get me wrong, this film is funny; it has several genuine belly laughs, which is more than you get at the cinema these days, but it's mostly a slapstick, broad humour that is more Carry-On than the intellectual gymnastics of the original work . Ian Carmichael is surprisingly attractive in this film (he reminded me of Mike Myers!) -but again, not ... Read More:
