After being slightly let down by "Hot Fuzz", I had high hopes for "Run Fat Boy Run" as I saw a couple of trailers about a month before it came out and thought it looked pretty good. Whilst I never got to see it at the cinema, my sister just brought this DVD for my birthday recently.

Directed by David Schwimmer (Friends' Ross Geller) and with a fantastic cast including Dylan Moran (Black Books), Thandie Newton (The Pursuit of Happiness) and Hank Azaria (Friends' David "from Minsk", the scientist boyfriend of Pheobe Buffay), the story of "Run Fat Boy Run" centres around Simon Pegg's character Dennis Doyle, a shop security guard who, since getting cold feet on his wedding day and jilting his pregnant fiancee Libby (Newton) at the altar ... That this film won the Oscar for best film is absurd.

Just because it had an allegedly worthy message isn't enough to make it a good film. Besides its message is asanine and its delivery appalling.

First, there is no character differentiation or depth at all. Every single character is shown to be a) completely unhappy, b) mainly due to being subject to racial prejudice, leading to c) them being racist themselves. Just in case you can't see that, every character, often on first appearance, and then again, and again, make explicit statements about being unhappy/racist/victims of racism. That such a complex issue is dealt with so superficiality cannot be excused just by the fact that Hollywood so abjectly fails to address race ... Read More:

This film is silly. Vampires never have and certainly don't exist. This is a greebo fantasy film designed to get the patchouli smelling pound out of the goth purse. Tom Cruise again disappoints with school play type pretending, ruining the whole film for any serious actors to shine. Yet again little big face adorns the cover of the DVD, this could be a good guidline as to the quality of the film. There could be a formula for the amount of Cruise face to size of cover equaling the overall quality of the film. I have a zero tolerance approach in that prescence of Cruise equals the blues. The film's author, Mrs Rice had reservations about casting Cruise in this, if only people had listened to her. No oscar again for Cruise.

Appalling acting - even by Judi Dench - how did she ever let herself be involved.
The is no real story - and what there is is inconsistent between beginning and the end.
Poor special effects.
Dire action sequences. The fights are laughable.
But worst of all the continuity is shot.

- Golden Child? Great
- Dr Doolittle(s)? No probs
- Daddy Day Care? Good
- Nutty Professor(s)? Indeed
- 48 Hours and BHills Cop aren't my cup-of-tea but are classic Murphy
- NORBIT is far and away the closest to 'Donkey' that Eddie Murphy has come to (and that says something considering he voiced 'Donkey' in the Shrek films - which were great!)
If you like Eddie Murphy and are wondering whether to watch Norbit - don't! - watch COMING TO AMERICA and watch it again and again - just do not watch Norbit! I laughed once, maybe twice (whence 2 stars instead of 1 - I don't hate it but I definately don't like it!), but that was at the situation, not at the characters: Norbit is a muppet (actually, no, that's degrading to the Muppets!) ... The film is very poor, easily the weakest in the series. It has a plot so thin it's translucent and rather than being seen as a film, it should be regarded as a rather meaningless sequence of quite ridiculous set-pieces and special effects. Dougray Scott proves here in this film once again that he quite simply cannot act, he merely leanrs words and delivers them and even Tom Cruise just doesn't seem interested. On the strength of this,if you're planning to make a ridiculous martial arts flick where story and performances just don't matter then John Woo is the director for you, otherwise please don't let this man near a film camera again!

A lot of Blu Ray disks at the moment mainly concentrate on the film itself, which is nice, but having the extras is a bonus, and this disk doesn't disappoint: all the extras from the original The Pursuit Of Happyness are here, which is great.

The film itself is good, Will Smith carrying Chris Gardner off well, and his son Jaden great. The story can sometimes be a bit unbelievable, but the way it's told really does make it enjoyable. Plenty of funny bits in between the sadness; the chases to get the bone scanner being some of the best action bits.

The Blu-ray transfer is great, 24fps, 1080p AVC, so it's great quality. The sound is also well transferred: 5.1 PCM, which isn't bad, would have liked TruHD, but that's by the by.
