Next time you have a rainy afternoon to spend with a box of chocs and a video, you can't do better than this. If you hanker for a time when everyone was elegant, witty and blessed with a honeyed voice, this is for you. The music is, of course, the main focus; but there's some brilliant acting going on here as well.

Smashing.

On the back of my DVD of The Last Waltz, which is almost certainly the same as this edition, it's described as "one of the most important cultural events of the last two decades!" In the first place, it was made three decades ago. In the second place, that's an absurd description of what was nothing more than a glossy and overblown documentary of a moderately good live performance.

The Band's drummer Levon Helm, in his bawdy, gritty and very readable autobiography 'This Wheel's On Fire', describes the circumstances of the original concert; guitarist Robbie Robertson had got tired of touring and wanted to go out with a bang. Helm was incredulous that Robertson wanted to take the band off the road, but feeling that he had no choice he ... Read More:

Had the video for some years before I bought the DVD and always rated it as one of my favourite concerts for quality of the performance and the sound/picture quality. The DVD just improves it even more. One of the most perfect live concerts ever filmed under very carefully controlled studio conditions with a live audience. Fabulous all the way through with great individual performances from the band members. A must for any fan.

I love this DVD, it is both interesting and has some incredible songs. From the Grateful Dead's country ramblings to the insane guitar solo played by Buddy Guy whilst on a forklift truck, this DVD has everything you (or at least I) could ask for. The documentary footage and interviews with band members and organisers is also very interesting. If you like Woodstock, then there is no reason why you should not like this..... you should love it!

Now I may be from Scotchland, but Scotch music has pretty much passed my by. I'm from an era when too many childhood Hogmanays were spent in the company of Moira Anderson and Andy Stewart, the kind of thing it takes therapy I've never been able to afford, to get over.

I tried once. Went to a Runrig gig and everything, only to find myself surrounded by people I normally run a country mile to avoid. These were scary obsessives! So I wasn't rushing to sit down and spend 70 minutes in the company of the Battlefield Band, even if it was filmed just doon the road in Musselbrae.

Nowadays, they probably get mentioned most in association with past members, Karine Polwart and John McCusker (Kate Rusbys husband), but they've been on the go for ... Read More:

DVD : The Red Badge of Courage [1951] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
"Red Badge Of Courage" was a film destined to fail from its inception. Louis B. Mayer never wanted the picture to be made and did what he could to discourage the process. He felt it could never be a commercial success without female characters or established stars. Mayer expressed his views directly to John Huston, he said, "It has no story and won't make a cent!"

When the film was finally completed, the test screenings were a failure. Houston remarked: "With the Red Badge of Courage, I quite understood at the time why they took the steps they did. I was present at a preview when damn near a third of the audience got up and walked out of the theatre."

Various edits were tried without the participation of Huston, who was working on ... Read More:
