This is the fifth recording I have of Monteverdi's Vespers, which I have also heard frequently in performance. I bought it because of the reviews I read here. I could not finish it and have given it away. It would take a book to explain what is wrong with it. Briefly I found it coarse, unsubtle and vulgar. The subtle rhythms are thrown away by the crude interpretation, the tempi and dynamic changes are distracting and the whole effect contrived. Head and shoulders above every performance I have heard is Andy Parrott's, though this is flawed. Personally I shall stick to reading the score.

On the strength of this, I hope that all the Gardiner cantatas are released in CD form. These are wonderful performances, with the added bonus of a documentary of the Pilgrimage, culminating in the marvellous final chorus of the New Year cantata BWV190 in New York of the sadly-altered skyline. As one previous reviewer said, at the end of the road for the Pilgrimage, the burden rises visibly from JEG.

I can't add to what the previous reviewers said, except to say that I disagree with the reviewer who didn't like Magdalena Kozena's performance of BWV199. This is not opera, and therefore it seems to me that the singer is not necessarily supposed to agonise appropriately over the words. Was proper emotion to be found in the words as sung? To me, ... 4.Christmas Oratorio - Johann Sebastian Bach starring: The Monteverdi Choir, The English Baroque Soloists, John Eliot Gardiner

DVD : Christmas Oratorio - Johann Sebastian Bach
I regard Gardiner's audio version of this piece to be the best on record, but this DVD is Something Else Again. Gloriously played and sung, the ability to watch it all happening adds enormously to the enjoyment of the piece. The baroque surroundings of the Herderkirche, Weimar are beautiful and atmospheric and Gardiner's affection for the work is clearly on show - no routine ground-out musical production this. The accompanying essay on the background of the year-long cantata pilgrimage (then in the future - this performance was the "kick-off") is also interesting. If you want joyous Christmas music, it simply doesn't come any better than this. Highly recommended.

DVD : Weihnachtsoratorium BWV 248 - Christmas Oratorio Part 1 To 6 [1999]
Brilliant. Absolutely, stunningly, mind-blowingly brilliant. This was the kick-off concert for the Gardiner Bach cantata pilgrimage of 2000, performed in the Herderkirche, Weimar. I have Gardiner's CD of the Weihnachtsoratorium, which I previously regarded as the best version. Not any more. This knocks spots off it. Soloists (vocal and instrumental), the EBS and of course the marvellous Monteverdis are on top form and the whole thing crackles with excitement. Gardiner clearly has a ball; no routine music-making this, this is passionate with a capital P. He also has a feeling for the dance-like rhythms in much of the piece - just listen to the Monteverdis sizzle through the skittering opening chorale of Cantata 5 and see how long you can stop your feet from tapping. ... this dvd recording is top class. John Eliot is an absolute genius and so genial with it. The players and singers are top drawer too and the rehearsal was an absolute delight throughout. JEG knows how to get the best out of the musicians and his understanding and interpretation of Bach's glorious music is surely unsurpassed?

"Satisfaction guaranteed" I baptise this comment, because by the time this dvd ends you're likely to be satisfied all-round. It is one of those performances where the end-sum ends up adding more than its parts, an ensemble success if there ever was one with no particularly outstanding, aweing contributions. ... Pape and Roschmann heading a very sucessful group of principal characters and Barenboim conducting very lively throughout, even riotously in the second half of the second act, his impeccable band of musicians. If you were in the Staatsoper Unter Den Linden the evening this quite traditional staging was taped, you're likely to have headed towards your after-theatre dinner or to your hotel with a smile as broad as your face.
