Absolute magic! I saw this as a child and it inspired me into career of dance. As a child, I adored to watch it and try to imitate the characters. Frederick Ashton's choreoegraphy brings the animals to life with imagination and fun. In the early 70's The Royal Ballet was in it's glory days with dancers like beautiful Leslie Collier, Wayne Sleep and Michael Coleman: who's Pas De Chat-ing Jeremy Fisher I'll never forget, dancers filled with style, creativeness and that tremendous RB technique. This is a joy, something to have on the shelf for any ballet fan or budding ballerina. Enjoy!

From the second you put this DVD on do not look away unless you want to miss a treat. From the first dance by Lis Jeppesen I guarantee you to be captivated,Sorella Englund as the old fortune teller is a stroke of genius. The costumes are spot on and I could not find fault with any of the performers.
It is a short ballet, with much crammed into it,sylphs that disappear up chimneys leading on to the entrance of the bride to be with her friends,a very merry party indeed, this being the point where the groom disappears into the forest to look for his sylph.
Act2 is the more moving as James ends up killing the sylph and dying his self,Im sure you havent seen many ballets where both the main characters die but if you miss this one you`ve missed ... Read More:

I bought this dvd purely to see Lesley Collier and was not disappointed, she is without doubt one of the greatest ballet dancers ever. This is a musical panto ,and is blessed with a very good corps de ballet,Brian Shaw is a perfect Dame(who could not like the clog dance),so if its good dancing,a charming panto and lovely musical score you want, this will no doubt be the one for you...

I saw this when it was first broadcast on the BBC at christmas time and loved it, so to own it on dvd is truly wonderful. It'll make you feel like an awe filled child again, it does with me anyway. I cannot begin to imagine the work and effort that is required from everybody involved to produce a ballet of this quality but I'm full of admiration. This production of The Nutcracker is completely faultless, everything is so splendid, the costumes, the stage, the music, everything, and all the dancers are amazing. Well, this is The Royal Ballet at The Royal Opera House, so the perfection is no surprise. The special features are very impressive too, short interviews with Sir Peter Wright and Sir Anthony Dowell and a behind the scenes piece, which shows that putting on a ... Read More:

Although this is an archive recording from video tape from 1982 the quality is actually quite good. If you've never seen Macmillan's ballet of Manon you're in for a treat. The score is an amazing confection of Massenet pieces (ironically none from his own Manon opera) by Leighton Lucas and is worth listening to alone. Macmillan's choreography is rather gentler at times than his other great narrative works such as Romeo and Mayerling, but has the most delicate solos and pas de deux you'll ever see. But there are also moments of violence and great despair - the final pas de deux set in the Louisiana mangrove swamps is amazing!

Whilst the dancing of the corps is not at its finest, and the soloists are good but not great, the marvel of this recording is the Des ... Read More:

The clips here are predominantly from the Royal Ballet, with a couple from the Kirov, one from the Paris Opera & a long segment from American Ballet Theatre's Don Quixote.

Any disc with dancing from Baryshnikov, Collier, Dowell, Ferri & Bussell is worth watching.

The biggest disappointment is the sections from the Kirov: poorly directed with focus on the dancers' faces rather than the whole body in Giselle, and rather unexciting dance & choreography in Sleeping Beauty.
