What a travesty of Traviata! With the world's most beautiful soprano (physically and musically)what were the production team thinking about? Why do these people imagine that they can improve on the original. Gilding the lily rarely works. If only this had been done in the same way as the Solti version, i.e. traditionally. It could then have been the benchmark Traviata for years.

Along the years, there's been some argument in the musical press whether Busoni was a great composer or if he rather was, as Richard Strauss's own pun on himself, a first class second rate one. Well, this work, one of the most intriguing operas written during the 20th Century, is indeed a very serious argument towards establishing Busoni among the great composers. It has been slow in gaining recognition since its premiere in 1925, with all too infrequent performances, a kind of cult item that saw the stage, alongside Pfitzner's Palestrina and Hindemith's Mathis der Maler, only in solemn, festive occasions and mostly in the German-speaking orbit, the three works characterised as they are by an aura of deep philosophic content, in their different ... DVD : Vienna State Opera Gala 2005 - Gala Concert 50th Anniversary Of The Re-Opening
On November 5, 2005 the Vienna State Opera held a gala to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the reopening on November 5, 1955 of the Opera after its destruction by Allied bombs in 1945 followed by the ten-year-long reconstruction. They pulled out all the stops and had a cast of stars (as well as current stalwarts of the Opera): five conductors (Ozawa, Gatti, Mehta, Thielemann and Welser-Möst) and such luminaries as Domingo, Baltsa, Gruberova, Hampson, Terfel and Kirchschlager, as well as the fabulous Opera chorus and the Vienna Philharmonic. The gala featured scenes from six of the seven operas given new productions in that 1955 season -- Don Giovanni, Der Rosenkavalier, Aida, Meistersinger, Frau ohne Schatten and Fidelio. The whole thing ... Read More:

Parsifal - Wagner [2005]

Nikolaus Lenhoff has excelled himself in this production, retaining a traditional atmosphere in the stage sets and costumes but adding modern overtones, the asteroid embedded in the monastery wall, the bullet holes in the stonework, debris, and the knights clad in shabby uniforms reminiscent of trench warfare in WW1.

The Gurnemanz of Matti Salminen is a wise traditionalist holding the disparate characters together, with Waltraud Meier giving extraordinary depths to the enigmatic Kundry.

Christopher Ventris as Parsifal takes us through the journey from pure fool to enlightenment. Also his new knowledge is the catalyst for a transition from past to a new future, symbolised by Parsifal and ... Read More:

Incredible and brilliant! You have to take into account this is a contemporary production and in set in modern times - not the 19th century. If you are not prepared for this and expect something traditional then look else where. Willy Decker has done a brilliant job here and made something very special. I can't fault it but I reckon its worth seeing the "Bonus DVD" first as this explains the concept and how the production was made. As ever Anna and Rolando were electric on stage, with also a fine performance by Thomas Hampson. Buy it - you won't regret it.

This is a lovely production - Alagna and Mattila are really on top form. The staging and lighting is very attractive. But, it is has to be said that this is a very lugubrious opera and sometimes one just has enough of Verdi continuously moaning (musically!) and one just yearns for the infectious delight of Mozart!

This concert version of the Betty Comden/Adolph Green/Leonard Bernstein 1953 Broadway hit demonstrates just how much skilled, experienced professionals can accomplish. The three turned out the score in four weeks. The production was a vehicle for Rosalind Russell's star return to Broadway after years in Hollywood...and Russell couldn't sing. They fashioned a series of raucous, tender, funny, romantic songs, with Russell's efforts tailored to her comedy skills and limited vocal ability. The show was a smash, and so is this concert performance conducted by Simon Rattle.

Kim Criswell sings Ruth Sherwood and Audra McDonald sings her younger sister, Eileen. The book is based on Ruth McKenney's best seller My Sister Eileen. Ruth wants to be a writer, Eileen ... Read More:

This sounded great to my (admittedly inexpert) ears, but it was marred by all the 'trite motifs' typical of producers who think they know better than Verdi or Shakespeare. And they don't. They really don't.
