This film was based on a novel by Steven Pressfield but the real inspiration was from the Hindu Epic The Mahabaharata where there is an interesting conversation that leads to the holiest of Hindu Scriptures known as the Bhagavad Gita. Will Smith as Bagger Vance (pronounced in an Indian way as Bhagawan; another name for Krishna) is brilliant and is ably supported by Matt Damon as R. Junuh (alternatively pronounced as Arjuna). The story shows Smith as a caddy and also spiritual guide to Damon...as in the Bhagavad Gita.
A nice, tender film at the hand of writer/director Robert Redford. Matt Damon is the leading man in this film as a former golfer that brushes up on his talents of the past, whilst Will Smith plays a supporting guardian angel ... Read More:

DVD : Fay Grim [2006] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This is my first Hal Hartley film and I had no idea it was a sequel to `Henry Fool'. Parker Posey plays Fay Grim, the wife of Henry Fool. She does not seem to have her life in order. But who can blame her. Her husband is on the run or dead, her brother is in jail and her son just got expelled from school. What could be worse?

Here is where this espionage spoof film takes off on its implausible but interesting ride. A C.I.A. agent is waiting in her home for her to return. He informs her that her husband is dead, and the multi-volume diary he wrote is wanted by every government in the world. And now that they know Parker can obtain some of them, they all try to use her.

The C.I.A. convince Fay to fly to Paris to retrieve ... Read More:

DVD : Henry Fool [1998] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
One tries not to throw the word brilliant around too often, as doing so robs the word of any meaning, so I am quite sincere when I bestow the word brilliant on this remarkable film - after all, what is artistic brilliance if not the ability to call forth beauty from the midst of ugliness? This story takes place against a depressing backdrop of poverty, desperation, and dysfunction. Simon Grim (James Urbaniak) works as a garbage man, endures physical attacks on the streets, and comes home each night to a thoroughly dysfunctional family. His mother is obviously depressed and, at times, nonresponsive, while his sister Faye (Parker Posey) is irresponsible and only interested in fulfilling her own [...] needs as often as possible. Simon himself seems anti ... Read More:

DVD : Teknolust [2002] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Rosetta Stone (Tilda Swinton), bio-geneticist creates three artificial sweeties, Ruby/Marinne/Olivia (Tilda Swinton), each with her own color coordinated environment. She uses her own DNA and hopes to have created something better than people. They soon gain their own personalities. By sneaking into the outside world, they eventually teach Rosetta how to live in the real world.

This has the feel of an independent low budget film. There is no correlation to reality; so real techies would barf. But other than that this is an interesting story and lots of color and sound. The science is appalling and amusing. The lust part of "Teknolust" is so mild that you need to look closely. About the time you get used to it the 85 minutes are over.

DVD : Book of Life [1998] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Prepare for an incredible journey through modern-day New York as Jesus makes his unannounced return. The lawyers aren't worried, but the Devil is - he talks to his audience through staged microphone and black-and-white camcorders! Mary Magdelene seems to be alive and well in New York too, helping our Lord to locate the Book of Life (a laptop!) and open the three remaining seals, thus bringing about the end of the world.

Among all this major character action is the simple tale of a New Yorker who wins the lottery and then has her soul put in jeopardy by a well-meaning friend.

As with other films by Hal Hartley, suspending disbelief and engrossing yourself in independent film-making at its very best results in a refreshing experience, a feel ... Read More:
