DVD : Beethoven: Symphonies 3 & 9 -- Berlin PO/Abbado [2000]
I jumped at the chance to have Beethoven's symphonies on dvd, and by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Abbado, no less. I ordered the complete nine symphonies and have listened to the fifth, seventh and ninth to date. The conductor and this great orchestra are wonderful as one might expect. My problem is with the techinical quality of the recordings. These recordings are "remastered," not being originally made as 5.1 Dolby or DTS and do not begin to approach the quality that this medium is capable of producing. On my equipment, the dolby is clearly better than DTS. The picture quality is even poor with the DTS format. Sadly, this seems to be the rule for the few dvd recordings that are currently available for classical music. The companies ... Read More:

I'm sorry to say I found this a scrappy affair - the main problem for me is that I find Solti's conducting all effect and no substance, a brash noise that saps all the humanity from this wondrous score, not helped by terrible sound balance from the pit between brass and strings (shame on you, Decca!).

The singing is variable - the 3 awesome female roles reflect this; Marjana Lipovsek's Nurse is rightly praised by other reviewers, a cornerstone in the casting that holds the whole production together, and great to see Solti's decision to restore the traditional cuts in Act 3 bringing the Nurse's role back to the fore - she is a wonderful actress and singer in one, terrifyingly powerful with seemingly relentless stamina! I've never ... Read More:

DVD : Die Frau Ohne Schatten - Richard Strauss [1992]
Unfortunately I did not see this 1992 production live at Salzburg but I have seen several others: this easily beats the lot. Rolf Glittenberg's designs are the first I've seen which capture the magic symbolism of this work with images that are intense and memorable in a simplicity that hits the spot. Gotz Friedrich's direction ensures excellent acting. Vocally the cast is first rate with glorious performances by Cheryl Studer as the Kaiserin and Eva Marton as the Dyer's unstable but always sympathetic wife. Robert Hale as Barak is very convincing. No less than Bryn Terfel has the small but important role of the Spirit Messenger. But Marjana Lipovsek steals the show with a terrifying portrayal of the Amme, one of Strauss's most expressionistic and ... Read More:
