I'm one of the many people who get depressed around Christmas time, i get stressed out and just cant handle it. When i feel like giving in, i watch its a wonderful life. This film can bring me back from the brink of despair, and makes me remember what Christmas is actually about! Being with family, enjoying each others company. Its a truly amazing film, that really warms your heart. Any other humbugs out there like me, should watch this, and remember the true spirit of Christmas!

Everyone had gone on about this film for years telling me how brilliant it was so I decided I'd beter watch it! I have to say I have seen better films involving dance or someone coming from a bad background and finally 'making it'. It was a good experience and the music was great but I'd much rather watch something like 'Center Stage' or even the second 'Dirty Dancing' again and again than this more than once.

DVD : It's A Wonderful Life [1946]
Yes, it is a great life affirming movie with its heart firmly in the right place...BUT...personally I would have prefered not such a happy ending, or a very different kind of happy ending - I just feel that the miraculous turnaround of George's fortunes at the end, while rightly suggesting that all good deeds may be remembered, and returned in kind, missed a real chance to state that happiness didn't have to depend on material wealth at all - After all, when he was given his old life back, George's euphoric happiness was based soley upon his family and friends, regardless of his dire financial state! This was a real chance to bang the point home about the real dangers of capitalism, but it was totally spurned. Indeed, this ending almost suggested, after roundly ... Read More:

Although often dismissed - usually by those who haven't seen it - the1979 version of All Quiet On the Western Front is surprisingly impressive and well worth a look. Originally made for American television as one of a slew of superior adaptations of classic novels by producer Norman Rosemont that also included The Man in the Iron Mask, The Count of Monte Cristo, Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol, this earned a theatrical release outside the US and certainly stood up admirably on the bigger screen.

Unlike the 1931 version, this version follows the flashback structure of Remarque's novel much more closely and provides a slightly different ending (because it was a new adaptation of the novel rather than a remake of the Universal film, they couldn't use ... Read More:

This is James Stewart at his absolute best. Frank Capra was a brilliant director and this is right up there with all his other classic movies. The story of the young, naive country boy heading off to the big city and initially making a fool of himself is brilliantly done. The interaction between Stewart and his co-star, the wonderful Jean Arthur, is a joy to watch. The finale with Stewart on his feet talking non-stop in the Senate is must see cinema. I would love to be able to go and see this on a big screen to fully appreciate just how good this movie is.

Ludicrously 'old fashioned' in the sense that Mr Schrader is stuck in 1987 having an inappropriate cocktail with already outmoded lounge monster, Mr Ferry.
The whole thing feels like Bladerunner. There's even a scene where a character is illuminated through a venetian blind !
Lot's of sub-Wildean/Capote witticism. Lots of archness. Lots of Bowie-like 'style'. No substantial plot whatsoever. Lots of being beaten around the head with 'Mr Bush is intolerable and American Society is beastly and going to the dogs' (Check out the Robert Hughes reference).
So.. as subtle as big shoulders and, all in all .. a good film for any fop over forty.
