Though it's nice to have the entire Blackadder collection in one neat DVD-set, there's no comparison between Season One (1983) and the subsequent three seasons.

The 1983 series was directed by Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder) and Richard Curtis. Though Brian Blessed is a superb actor, the dialogue is mildly amusing at best. It simply can't hold a candle to the 1985, 1987 and 1989 seasons - all directed by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. Season 2 is set in the first Elizabethan Era (late 16th century). Miranda Richardson is hilarious as Queen Elizabeth and it also features a young(ish) Stephen Fry as Lord Melchett. Season 3 is probably my favourite; it's set in the Regency period (early 19th century) where Hugh Laurie excels as Prince George. ... Read More:

On first watching `Blackadder II' I found it a big disappointment as I was a big fan of `The Black Adder'. That the episodes were virtually entombed in sitcom set's lost some of the depth of the first series which was mainly shot on location on film. Also that the stories were more traditional sitcom farce and underplayed the historical significance of some of the characters seemed a wasted opportunity. The shift from Medieval to Elizabethan England was possibly a bigger jar but the transition was harmonised by the Shakespeare connections.

Subsequent re-watching bears out this shift from the original series but it makes up for these shortcomings by a sharper script and by making Edmund the dominant character with Baldrick as a hapless assistant ... Read More:

I must confess that, as of writing this review, I have yet to see the animated Disney feature "101 Dalmatians". I really have to wonder, though, how Disney came to acquire the notion that making a live-action equivalent would be a good idea. But the result is certainly entertaining enough to stand for its own merits.

The story is the same as in the animated movie; that of fur-obsessed fashion guru Cruella DeVil stealing Dalmatian puppies from married couple Anita and Roger (Jolie Richardson and Jeff Daniels, the latter not even attempting to adopt an English accent), in order to make a coat out of them. If the law will not stop Cruella's plans in time, then the dogs will.

The star of the movie - asides from the dogs, of course, delivering ... Read More:

Actually this is an enjoyable enough movie for those who love Glenn Close or Ioan Gruffudd, and there are lots of fun elements to enjoy. The parrot who thinks he is a dog is an absolute scream, and the film itself is well made and well shot in my opinion. There is nothing really wrong with it except for the story itself. I can't even fault the script really...I think they did the best they could under the circumstances, and the actors all came up trumps...but as I say it's the story that lets the whole thing down.
Sometimes an original story based on established characters can work well (and has done), but this is not one of them. The story in my opinion is far-fetched even for a Disney film, and rather daft, but all in all it makes the most of what it has, ... Read More:

Exec 1 - So what is popular at the moment?
Exec 2 - Well Shaun of the Dead was really popular
Exec 1 - And so was The Office.....
Exec 2 - What about Hostel? people like scary stuff
Exec 1 - So we should make a horror comedy like Shaun of the Dead?
Exec 2 - but with funny bits like The Office and violence like Hostel
Exec 1 - We'll rake in the dosh

What could possibly go wrong?

Well quite a lot as it happens.

A horror/comedy has to fulfil 2 basic requirements, firstly it has to contain some effective and scary horror, secondly it has to be funny.

This fails on both counts, the attempts at comedy are risible and the horror is just laughable, it's simply badly scripted derivative nonsense. ... Read More:

As an entertaining film this one is as good as any; whether it is re-watchable is doubtful but nonetheless it is good entertainment. Ewan McGregor does the film justice but it was difficult to believe in Anna Friel's part as Lisa. It is, of course, a docudrama in style.

There is more than one theme weaving its way through this story the main one being the complacency of institutional management closely followed by incompetence of those whose responsibility is to ensure the efficiency of the organisation's operations so it is an expose of the fissures of monolithic management structures. It is the same tale as the story of the 'Million Dollar Bubble' that occurred in the US a few years ago.

The culpability for this disaster and its criminal aspect lay ... Read More:

It was great to see the Blackadder cast together again, 10 years after the show finished on such a high. It's just a shame that the latest episode 'BAck and Forth' is such a let down.
The whole plot is too far fetched even for Blackadder and sees our favourites Blackadder and Baldrick time travelling.
There are some good bits which are thinly spread across the half hour episode and even they aren't that funny.
I thought the whole cast and crew tried too hard to make it funny. It was over produced. And where was lord Percy?
This episode is only worth watching because it is a blackadder, without that title, no-one would care.
The best reason to buy the DVD is the comic releif special, which reminds us how good the show really was. The special is about the ... Read More:

The Line of Beauty is a 2004 Booker Prize-winning novel by Alan Hollinghurst. The book explores the tension between Nick's intimate relationship with the Feddens, in whose parties and holidays he participates, and the realities of his sexuality and gay life, which the Feddens accept only to the extent of never mentioning it. It explores themes of hypocrisy, homosexuality, madness and wealth, with the emerging AIDS crisis forming a backdrop to the book's conclusion. It is a breathtaking portrayal of life among the privileged governing Tory classes during the early to middle 1980s.

The novel was adapted for television by Andrew Davies as a three-part mini-series for BBC Two, broadcast in 2006. This sophisticated social analysis is captured to perfection in the mini-series. It is no ... Read More:

This TV series was made in the days of Thatchers Britain when the Labour party had a long way to go before it's transformation into New Labour. It dramatizes how many people (notably British business and the press) of the time were scared stiff of what would happen if Labour was elected. Well, we get a raw glimpse of those fears and how the right wing establishment might have responded in this story of Harry Perkins (portrayed brilliantly by Ray MacAnally), a newly elected very left-wing Labour prime minister. His agenda includes unilateral nuclear disarmament and removing U.S. bases from British soil. This leads to an unelected clique of spies, diplomats and businessmen conspiring to wreck Perkin's government and bring it down. It all ends in a very British Coup; no firing squads and no torture.
