This DVD version is absolutely fantastic. I watch it all the time. Both Sally Hawkins and especially Rupert Percy Jones are wonderful in this production. I was caught up with Cpt. Wentworth's cold icy look which gradually turned softer as he realised his feelings for Anne were being revived. I especially loved when they meet in the shop during the rain, when he speaks of how a man cannot overcome such a passion to such a woman, he can barely look at her! The parts were played perfectly and although it differentiates from the book on many levels I adored every second of it. I loved the 1995 version but Cpt. Wentworth was not how I imagined - I much prefer the RPJ eye candy with his dulcet dones declaring his undying love for Anne Elliot.

DVD : Casino Royale (2 Disc Collector's Edition) [2006]
A lot has been made of Casino Royale's new direction. Out with the nonsense, back to basics, enter James Bourne. Q is agreeably absent, and the nearest thing to Moneypenny is a control-room full of 20-something CSI wannabes. In cleaning up his act, however, Bond appears to have misplaced his licence to thrill.

That Casino Royale constitutes a 'back to basics' reincarnation (a 'reboot' of the Bond timeline, in comic-book argot) speaks volumes about how far the series had lost its way - sort of like a drunk waking up after a twenty-year bender and learning to put one foot in front of the other again. Like bourbon or vodka, pyrotechnics and body counts are kept firmly out of the repentant screenplay's reach. Nothing happens in Casino Royale ... Read More:

Season 2 of HBOs excellent 'Rome' continues on exactly were the first season finished. Caesar has been assasinated and the subsequent power struggle once again sets Rome towards civil war. Mark Antony and Octavian must fight for survival and they try to bide for time until they can extract revenge.

Once again the acting is hugely impressive and the characters are all deep, complex and highly enjoyable. This is a wonderfull production and its hard to find a better television series. Its not for the faint hearted, there is plenty of blood, sex and violence for the more timid of us to shy away from ..... but if, like me, you like your drama's gritty and realistic then this is for you.

Excellent.

This inspiring and harrowing portrayal of Belsen is a must see. Based on eyewitness accounts, letters and diaries written by those who were there this drama makes compulsive viewing.

Quite simply, near the end of the war a small medical team was diverted to a little known camp, called Belsen. All they knew was that there was a medical emergency there, and that their help was needed. Little did they know what they were in for. What they saw when they arrived was squalor, death, disease, infestation and starvation. Amongst in-fighting wthin the group, lack of supplies and masses of red tape, this medical team fought to save lives. Despair and anguish sets in as the death rate increases, with no help from the German guards and medical staff.

DVD : The Low Down [2001]
This is for me a film that is honest, genuine in that it has been created rather that just put together, and interesting in the development of the story. Frank is, for me, quite a sympathetic guy, and likeable, but he does suffer from one fatal flaw in his character, a flaw which is hinted at earlier in the film but which only shows itself fully in the final stages.
It is a poingnant film, and all the characters are likeable, which helps the film a lot. And, yes, I think it is like real life. A very good piece of work all round.
I think the Amazon review is spot on.

There are some films that disprove the theory about plot being integral; Withnail and I, Lost in Translation, Waking Life to name but a few, and The Low Down is another great example of this.

There's no need for me to describe this film - you can read the synopsis for that. The performances are great and are, essentially, all that matters. Aiden Gillen is wonderful in the lead role, capturing the slight awkwardness, hints of OCD and insecurity of his character brilliantly. But the best performace in this film comes from Kate Ashfield who plays the dreamy Ruby. Be warned, though, if you're as sloppy a male as I am, you will fall head-over-heels in love with this character. I cannot begin to dscribe how utterly scrumptious she is in this film.

Rome is a masterpiece. The programme was made by both HBO and the BBC in one of the biggest co-producing partnerships in television history and oh boy, does it show.

The programme oozes class and glamour, offering passionate storylines and unforgettable characters who light up the screen. The first series focuses on Gaius Julius Caeser's ascent to power after rebelling against his friend and Co-Consul, Pompey Magnus. However, as well as focusing on the major historical figures of the time, it also tells the stories of the other people who were alive at the time. The other members of the senate, the soldiers involved in the epic battles which are brought to life in vivid detail and their families are all given a voice.

The performance of the cast as an ensemble ... Read More:
