and that says a lot after SCARFACE. But I have never seen anyone play a blind man as well as Pacino. The empty stare, most actors can't do it. Although a remake (the original is an Italian made film) this is a GREAT drama and fully deserves the Oscars it got! Actually worth 6 stars!

Now this film did take me a while to warm up to. The first two times I tried to watch it I was rather bored, though whether this is because I'm a woman, I'm not entirely sure. However the third time I watched it all the way through, and it honestly blew my mind. Cusack's performance's in movies are generally underrated, but here he generates utter brilliance, so much so that he kind of ruined the book for me, as I kept hearing his American voice for an English character.

If you take the equation of bigness of Cruise face on DVD cover as inversely proportional to the quality of the film you find it on, you should be able to avoid these seriously bad films. Yet again no awards for Toms own take on the acting profession that he tries and fails to be a part of. The story is sentimental trash, the writing is terrible and the car chases are virtually non-existant. This is another Cruise missile aimed directly at the soul of the viewers, way off target and fizzling out before ever being a serious threat. Avoid this tramp of a film.

If you have seen the original "School for Scoundrels" with Terry Thomas and Ian Carmichael and you rent this film expecting it to be just as funny then you're going to be disappointed. It's fine if you like films where wit and subtlety have been replaced by casual swearing. Come back from the pub on a Friday night and pop this into the DVD player and you'll get a few laughs. A talented cast tries its best with the thin script but they can only do so much.
