I have just finished watching this set. I had seen some early episodes originally but watched all again. It is almost a bit "Lost on Mars" as the early series now do seem dated or rather perfectly portraying that time - the early 1990s. I found myself watching the clothes of DCI Tennison and of course the ageing of her in her character with all the trials and tribulations faced by a woman in the police force and in her personal life. She is a demanding , admirable yet imperfect character and it is heart wrenching to see the last episode when retirement beckons. Absolutely fantastic performance by Helen Mirren and of course the rest who make their characters just so believable!

I've just bought and watched this because it's taken so long to get onto Pal Dvd.
I totally agree that the absence of extras and subtitles is disgraceful. That's only
part of my complaint. The picture quality is absolutely and utterly pathetic, I own
the vhs tapes on this series, I was delighted to see it released on dvd at last!
The picture quality is barely better than the vhs! I feel really cheated here.
What is the reason for such awful picture quality?? Revelation should be ashamed
of themselves for this release! Why was it not properly restored???
A great series ruined - what a waste of money! don't buy this!!!

I have every film adapted from John Grisham's novels except for The Gingerbread man, without a shadow of a doubt this is at best an okay film, it does not even begin to touch A time to kill, The Client, Runaway jury or The Chamber and whilst not being blown away by either The Rainmaker nor The Pelican brief, they are both comfortably better films than this.

The film lacks the power, conviction and the direction of all of those films listed.

An excellent cast with 2 of my favourite actors in Gene Hackman and Tom Cruise, but even they are not at their best by some way, the only reason why Tom Cruise stands out is due to his being on screen for most of the film, Gary Busey is barely in the film, maybe a couple of minutes at ... This film was such a disappointment for me, I really did expect a Great British gangster film that would show London's notorious criminals and how ruthless they were in their prime. Instead I found myself watching two clueless twins who are as intimidating as a pair of goldfish roaming London doing rather little. Their mother of the story is wrongly portrayed as an eccentric feminist and as for the music, well that belongs in a B movie horror. If you are considering buying this film please don't, it's really not worth it I assure you you will be as disappointed as me and be even more annoyed at the potentinal this film had.

What a great discovery this film turned out to be.
Never heard of it. Took a chance. Bingo.
Earthy Newcastle locations, fabulous b/w photography, great pace, wonderful performances and a fine, realistic script.
Director Sidney Havers went on to direct many of the best episodes of THE AVENGERS.
The DVD transfer is close to HD. On a 40" HD TV it looks so sharp and the greyscale tones are deep and beautiful.
This one makes me curious about the quality of other Optimum DVD releases.
Shame there is no trailer. Would have been cool to see how this gem was pitched, but the bottom line is, this is one terrific feature on a marvelous digital transfer that MUST have been taken from the original negative to make it look this good.

Took me ten years to catch this film had no idea what I had missed.
The film was given to me because of my deep love of Cornwall, in truth I would watch just about any old tripe if it included shots of the Cornish coast I love so dear. This coast has been an inspiration for artists for centuries. On a visit to Cornwall an inspired Richard Wagner wrote the greatest opera ever written - Tristan and Isolde.

Joseph Conrad in his story Amy Foster was at his most insightful. It is largely a story about 'difference' and how a shipwrecked stranger can be treated with hostility by the local community to the point where this endangers his life, Conrad was himself a polish immigrant to England. Amy, for quite diverse reasons is also an 'outsider' and ... Read More:

I have not read the book (though my wife has). We watched this rather long film (well it seems long) and came to the conclusion that it was a bit forced, though I liked the contrast between the attitudes of the two girl tenants at the end, the one seeing all the oddballs or outsiders in the rented out house as individuals worth knowing, the other seeing them as people to avoid! Worth seeing once for a view of London circa 1961 --film was released '62)-- which seemed long ago to me who lived there (and sometimes lived in rented rooms there) from 1976 and off and on into the 90's. The one thing that never changes is that "property owners", whether nice, nasty or whatever, or still parasites! And also, that rented rooms in London are really not a civilized place to live!

This was, without doubt, one of my favourite ever TV series when first aired. Flicking between channels I was lucky enough to find Episode 1 series 1 on UK TV Drama, and watched the entire series.

With them not airing Series 2 I bought the series off Amazon and, although having only watched first few episodes, this is just as good and as fresh as it was (gulp) 15 years ago. Episode 1 features a very young looking Daniel Craig, wonder whatever became of him? Thoroughly recommended.

This is truly classic light drama covering Reilly's career form the Russo-Japanese war to the rise of Stalin. The Reilly character is very charming (as are his numerous paramours) but treacherous and the story told in a compelling and serialised way. If you like good acting, realistic sets, and a good story free from all the agitating diversions in contemporary television programmes then this is for you. It would not be made today as producers feel compelled to dumb down content with infantile background `mood' noises that grind on the nerves. I suspect this is to distract from the lack of content, or perhaps most programmes these days are made for children rather than those with adult tastes. Even though it was made in the 1980s, it is not really dated except for the lack of the negative ... Read More:
