Platoon is a cinematic classic from Director Olive stone. And is supposedly his auto-biography of his experiences in Vietnam as a G.I. The characters in this film are based on real-soldiers he met in his 'platoon' in Vietnam.

I'm highly recommending the Special Edition for a feature documentary on the 'making of platoon' which is the best feature I've ever seen on a DVD to date. It shows how Oliver Stone put the cast through hell and back whilst shooting in the jungle. Plenty of accounts from Charlie Sheen, a young Johnny Depp, and Elijah Woods on how much they grew to hate Oliver Stone, which is exactly what he wanted!. A must see.

Delighted to see this is out on DVD. I saw this film at a charity screening and thought it was a perfect `Christmas Eve on the sofa' movie. In truth it offers a lot more than that - a great story, and very gently done throughout, successfully avoided falling into the schmaltz trap. Ultimately uplifting, but sensitive viewers may require a good box of tissues on the way there

Over the years I've avidly read numerous books on the American Civil War and, in terms of factual television, believe that the Ken Burns series was one of the greatest documentaries ever made. Having looked forward to watching Gettysburg with great anticipation, my sense of disappointment was therefore more crushing.

First, the plus points. The re-enactors do a sterling job in recreating the battle, adding something of an air of authenticity to proceedings, even if the battle scenes are somewhat over-sanitised (none of the truly horrific injuries for which this war is renowned were apparent no matter how intense the battle.) Additionally, the story, as told, is undoubtedly as historically accurate as a film production is likely to be. ... Read More:

Stunning movie - easily the best American urban/police thriller I've seen to date!
VERY stylish and often brutal, this hooks from start to finish.
It's not action packed, rather delivering thrills in short, sharp bursts. It's very atmospheric with an incredible central performance from Denzel Washington as antihero/villain, Detective Alonzo Harris, and strong support from Ethan Hawke as rookie officer, Jake Hoyt.
Look out for small roles from the likes of Snoop Dogg & Dr Dre, in this unflinching portrayal of the very mean streets of LA. Also, Scott Glen, Cliff Curtis & Tom Berenger. It's a real tough guys movie BUT not in the cliched action roles that we saw back in the '80s.
The direction from Antoine Fuqua is extremeley ... Read More:

Granted that both these Films are made from the Confederacy point of view,i feel that they had to be made to redress the bias shown by Hollywood over the years to the Noble Nothern Cause, with Films like Glory,The Red Badge of Courage, and numerous assorted other B Movies that show the Confederate Soldier as some country Hick, when in fact these so called Ragged Hicks routed the Union Army in Numerous Battles.Big Budget these Films are not,Sentimental in places.for sure, but never the less they provide an insight into a Turbulent Period of American History.I must Add that Robert Duvall as Gen.Robert E.Lee is simply Mesmerising.I for one think this Double boxed set presents real value for Money.

Im a huge stephen king fan and couldn't wait for this to come out. Not all the stories are horror but most are creepy and tragic. 'Battle ground' was the best and 'the fith quater' was probably the worst. Some episodes are more miss than hit, but always entertaining and there is something for almost everyone. Each episode is quite different, there is some great acting, great special fx and always enjoyable. All in all, this has some really unmissable episodes and a particularly creepy one named 'road virus heads north'. A neat and entertaining series, perhaps the best £25 i ever spent!

I bought this because of existing reviews. It starts well, a few surprises, tense and taught. The story holds up. The leads play well off each other. It kept my attention for about the first 75 minutes...but then the ending feels rushed and chaotic which was shame because up until then it was very good. I have given it four stars but really i would give it 3.5.

I have watched Platoon more than any other war movie. So much so that I've had to give it a rest over the last few years.
Why is it so good?
Perhaps because it is the most realistic (certainly Vietnam) war movie ever made. Its based on Oliver Stones own experiences in Vietnam. Now I doubt whether there were actually two so clearly good and bad characters, as represented by Willem Dafoe and Tom Beringer in the film, but it is the spark between these two that creates much of the films atmosphere.
There are quite a few scenes in this film, such as when the Charlie Sheen character wakes up in the middle of the night (in the jungle), that are wonderfully done. You really get an idea of just how scary being a soldier might be.
I'm also sure that ... Read More:

This film is an obvious capitalization of Basic Instinct's success. As usual in these cases, it fails. While the plot is promising, it never creates the proper atmosphere and it lacks depth. It is worth just for Sharon Stone, who is a pleasure to watch, and the redeeming soundtrack.

I had high expectations for this film, due to the plot and positive reviews. Sadly it's one of the first films I've watched in a long time that I had to turn of after 30 minutes. The pace was slow, it seemed (very) dated, and I didn't connect with the characters (and I like all other films I've seen Kevin Kline and William Hurt in). I love other character driven films like "The Breakfeast Club", but this was just far below what I expected.
