I first saw this film 30 years ago and was bowled over by the scenery and the actors. Recently I decided to watch it with a more critical eye and found to my surprise that I was even more captivated by the vastness of the landscape which throughout the film forms the backdrop for the tragic love story that unfolds.
At first I thought that Sharif's Zhivago was too "soft" but as the film unfolded I realised that he was "the poet". Christie was as always perfect as Lara and we shouldn't forget Chaplin as the dutiful and loving wife. She plays the role with just the right amount of pathos. However it is Steiger and Courtney who carry the film.
The sight of Courtney standing at the front of a military train rushing past civilians that ... Read More:

This is without doubt the greatest film ever filmed in Yorkshire - Bradford and a bit of Leeds ( and a short scene in Oxford Street). It has no faults, so rare for any film.

This was the film that made Julie Christie into a star, however she was not the first choice. The first Liz was played by Topsy Jane who became ill during the shoot and had to be replaced. Julie Christie was chosen because she was the first person they asked who was free to go to Bradford that week.

Germany Army officer Grau, a colonel in Wehrmacht Intelligence, is meeting with a French policeman, Inspector Morand, in Paris. The year is 1944. For two years Grau has been investigating the psychopathic murder of a prostitute that took place in Warsaw. The suspects are three Wehrmacht general officers. Says Inspector Morand to Grau, as he wonders why Grau is so persistent in his investigation. "Murder is the occupation of generals."

"Then let us say," Grau replies, "what is admirable on the large scale is monstrous on the small. Since we must give medals to mass murderers, why not give justice to the small entrepreneur."

The Night of the Generals is a mess. It sprawls all over the place, from Poland to Paris to Germany; ... Read More:

Having bought the stage play and compared this to the film they are the same but also they are not. The scene in the market ( actually in Halifax not Bradford) is told by Norman on stage. In the film you actually see everything. Both work but I do not know which is better. No wonder Ronald Harwood won an Oscar he really is one of the best writers working in Britain.

The only real invention for the film is the scene shot in York station.

I saw the film in Bradford at a cinema right next door to the theatre it was filmed in.

When ex-RAF fighter pilot Reginald Conyngham-Jarvis (Albert Finney) and former milkman Roy Southgate (Tom Courtenay) both become widowers within minutes of each other, an unlikely bond between them begins to form. Both men are from the opposite side of the social spectrum, Reginald, verbose, and self confessed womaniser, nevertheless less fond of his late wife, no idea of domesticity, and Roy the dedicated husband, never looked at another woman, more outwardly gentle and caring, both begin to share the same house, the formation of an "odd couple" type of scenario.

The theme behind the relationships of this touching, superbly acted drama, based on Angela Lambert's novel, is both characters providing to the other what each person badly needs. As the story ... Read More:

When a raging storm coincides with high seas the unthinkable happens; A colossal tidal surge slams into the Thames barrier, threatening the lives of millions of Londoners. It falls to three top marine engineers and barrier experts to find a way to save the city from total devastation.

For a TV movie the special effects in this are superb, with some very impressive scenes of famous landmarks in London being hit by huge waves. But where they spent the money on impressive visuals they must have skimped out on actors as the cast is truly awful giving some of the most wooden and emotionless performances I've seen in a long time. I thought that maybe Robert Carlyle would save the film but his put-on Cockney accent is just so laughable as well as his ex-wife's sometimes ... Read More:

I decided to buy this collection, in spite of the other reviews that described its poor video quality, so I have no right to complain. However, I wanted to add some specifics that the other reviewers did not mention. Far from being re-mastered, all four titles appear to have been taken from pre-existing transfers to analog tape. 'Far From the Madding Crowd' has the same scratches on it as on the VHS tape that I already owned. On top of this, these poor analog masters seem to have been digitally encoded in someone's garage using a cheap capture device and an old PC that someone found on a dump. The non-widescreen 'The Go-Between' seems to be from the same source as the DVD given away free by the Telegraph a while ago. The black-and-white titles have been so badly digitized that ... Schepisi has directed a magical bitter-sweet drama, helped by a cast reading like a who's who of British Londoner character actors: Courtenay, Hemmings, Caine, Hoskins, Mirren, Winstone and co turn in spellbinding performances in telling the story of their intermingled lives over the passage of time via the occasion of a journey to scatter the ashes of Jack (Caine), the town butcher and husband to Mirren, from Margate pier.

Not only that, but the cast playing their younger selves are first rate too and actually LOOK like the people they are supposed to be (especially JJ Feild, who looks the spitting image of a young Caine, and Kelly Reilly who bursts with sexual energy as Mirren's predecessor; the young Hemmings is played by the actor's son Nolan.)

My wife - who wasn't even born when King Rat was released - fell in love with George Segal as we watched this film last night. This film really does stand the test of time. Apart from Mr Segal there is wonderful naturalistic work from James Fox and Sir Tom Courtney, fully rounded cameos from Denham Elliot, James Donald and Sir John Mills but for me the treat was the performance of Patrick O'Neal as Max. This American actor was never again put to such use on screen. John Barry's music is spare and works to tighten the edge. It's moving, frightening and dryly amusing. Fans of the novel will not be disappointed in Bryan Forbes adaptation or his sharp, unfussy and unsentimental direction.
