I was old enough to remember what Liverpool was like in the early eighties. The city was trying to cope with mass unemployment and seeing the slow painful death of a port made famous by the slave trade. The riots that took place in Toxteth in 1981 had made national news, and yet it hardly registered here as the whole city was in such a state of rapid decline that a few buildings gutted by fire hardly registered.

And it is extraordinary that in this period Liverpool had a football team that swept all before them, a music scene that produced some of the most critically acclaimed acts of the decade (Japan and Echo and The Bunnymen, for example) and a vibrant local theatre scene. Out of this, and with a help with a few visionaries ... Read More:

I resisted seeing - or indeed even reading about - `Notes on a Scandal', as I had wrongly assumed it was the kind of tasteful, Oscar-baiting `Quality British Drama' that I loathe. With Cate Blanchette in tow, I thought I could smell theatre-honed, BAFTA-approved method acting a mile off. In fact, thematically and stylistically, it is nothing of the kind. Tellingly made by theatre director Richard Eyre, it is so cynical at heart that it comes across more like a satirical play than a drama. I don't know the novel (by Zoe Heller) this film was based on, but there is a misanthropic streak to `Notes on a Scandal' at odds with the kind of literary adaptation often served up by the British film industry. Films about obsessive admirers and jilted lovers are very ... Read More:

I've read the book "Wuthering Heights" many times and it's my favorite love story, so passionate and real. So I wanted to see an appropriate film version to this wonderful book. And I must admit, that this film completely catches the spirit and atmosphere of the book. I think it's very difficult to play the leading roles, especially the complicated Heathcliff's charachter. It's very hard not to make Heathcliff too human and otherwise not too savage. He is not a romantic hero and it's hard to show his vulnerability and passionate love for Catherine and his dark, cruel and vengeful nature at the same time. But I was pleasingly surprised. Robert Cavanah unbelievably well plays this role and the other actors are really good too. This film is really for those who ... Read More:

This was, without doubt, one of my favourite ever TV series when first aired. Flicking between channels I was lucky enough to find Episode 1 series 1 on UK TV Drama, and watched the entire series.

With them not airing Series 2 I bought the series off Amazon and, although having only watched first few episodes, this is just as good and as fresh as it was (gulp) 15 years ago. Episode 1 features a very young looking Daniel Craig, wonder whatever became of him? Thoroughly recommended.

I think this was one of the best and original British TV cop shows ever until all the foresnsic based ones came along. The acting is top quailty. The stories interesting. The chemistry between the characters, fun. This series has the episode 'nothing to declare' which stars Keith Allen as a customs and excise officer. He is very good in the part. The ending to this series has a suprise twist.

Every so often this one comes out of the collection and like fine vintage wine never fails to surprise and delight! It is simply fabulous. Cleese, Palin, Kline, and of course La Curtis wearing tight jeans! Doesn't she look fabulous? The story is very good, the plot twists, turns, and squirms its way to the finale. There are so many good punchlines, so many good scenes, so many memorable moments that it is too much to describe here. It would spoil it too. Quite simply one of the all time great movies.

I found Season 1 slightly disappointing - until the last few episodes, from then on it gets better and better.

Season 2 is awesome - after watching each episode you realize that you just saw something amazingly good.

Season 3 - what can I say ? Absolutely Great - it is even better than Season 2 : Perfect.

The series is perfect. No complaints. But on this DVD the commercial breaks are irritating.

DVD : Land Girls [1998]
I guess that Land Girls is there to give us a 'glimpse of life in the country during World War II'. Not much material there for a feature film you might think, at least not without the obligatory sex or violence and in this case you'd be right. As most of the violence was happening in Europe, that leaves the former, and thankfully we are spared any gratuitous action in this department. How many of you thought that this sort of thing didn't go on during the war?

Even so, the emphasis is more on the romantic element which hinges on the girls' relationships with Joe the farm boy and the ways in which their lives are shaped by them (well, sort of). Poor Joe looks constantly miserable in spite of his cavortings - joining the RAF is more important to him than a roll in the ... Read More:
