Sense and Sensibility, directed by Ang Lee with a screenplay written by Emma Thompson, made up one part of the holy trinity of Austen productions which aired in 1995. That crowning year for Austenmania began with the BBC production of Persuasion in April 1995 (starring Amanda Root and Ciáran Hinds), followed by the impeccable BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle) in September and October, and was capped off in mid-December by this film version of Sense and Sensibility. Emma Thompson's much-praised screenplay (for which she won an Oscar and a Golden Globe) straddles the difficult divide between pleasing the community of Jane Austen purists and making the 1811 novel appealing to a wider audience of cinema ... Another Harry Potter film and just like the first 2 films this is an enjoyable film whilst being nothing special. In fact this is a little better than the its two prequels which is a reason I enjoyed it more. The story is getting darker, the young actors are getting better and this movie sucked me in more than the other two did. However, I have given it 3/5 just like I did for the other films although I was tempted to give it 4 instead. I have never read the books, so Im not one of these that bores people by saying "its not as good as the book". Enjoy it for what it is .... an enjoyable childrens films that you can happly watch with your kids.

This is an awful adaptation. It bastardizes the essence of Shelley's novel. While the novel nurtures a moral dilemma at its heart, this destroys it. (This cannot be demonstrated better than when the monster rips out Elizabeth's heart, serving as an apt metaphor for the film ripping out the heart of the text). The sympathy for the monster which Shelley really draws on is completely undercut in the film by the monster's portrayal as a cold blooded murderer wanting an unjustified amount of revenge...it ignores the reasons behind his sadness, ignoring the carefully crafted manipulation which Shelley plays with the reader's own preconceived ideas.
Among the monstrosities are the changing of the monster's final speech when Victor had died, which should ... Read More:

True Comic Genius Indeed. Wilder & Pryor truly brought out the best in one another, and with "See No evil..." this is no exception.

"tis funny how natural comedy could be produced from life's most mundane moments!

Certainly one of my favourite "Pryor, Wilder" flicks!

It always makes my heart sink when I watch the "behind the scenes" documentaries of TV adaptations of books, and the focus is on how they've changed things, tried to make it "relevant to the modern age" and, by implication, improved upon the original. This is an enjoyable story, but it isn't "Oliver Twist." Now, I'm not a purist. I've just finished acting in a local version of the musical, Oliver! which also strays far from Dickens' original. But this one just isn't quite right. The characters keep the same names, but are not the same people. My particular gripe is with the way the Artful Dodger is portrayed. Dodger is a boy who thinks he's a man, cynical, arrogant and a joy to read about or watch. Yet here, he is yet another sulky, stroppy teenager. Oliver, ... Read More:

This is one of the best films that I have seen for years. Thought provoking, moving, funny and incredibly sad. A wonderful adaptation. Hardy gives his best performance yet.

First of all, any movie that includes Lawrence Fox is worth watching (I haven't seen him in anything I haven't liked, so far.); next, I found this well-acted two-part series absorbing from beginning to end. Damian Lewis is also excellent in the role of the charming rogue who almost gets away with his villainy.

The problem with the story, it seems to me, is that it couldn't quite make up its mind as to genre: Escape yarn? Love story? Murder mystery? Espionage thriller? It is all of these, but, given the name of the film, I can see how anyone expecting the first might be disappointed, since the narrative passes so quickly over many of the riveting details of the great escape stories that emerged during the 1950s, which concentrated both on life in the camp ... Another telling of the famous story. Ray Winstone plays Sweeney Todd, a man rebuilding his life after serving a lengthly prison sentence for a crime carried out by his father (his younger brother was hanged for the same).

Now the owner of a respectable barbers, his inner demons are put to test when a Newgate Prison Gaoler comes in for a shave boasting how he mistreats children in the prison, and thus becomes Sweeney Todd's first victim. Worse follows, a short time later his father reappears demanding money on a regular basis. At this point it is easy to see Todd as a victim, as he saves the life of a local constable, gives money to the prison children and buys a pie shop for a girl he befriends.

However her regular flow of lovers soon regret their actions ... Read More:

I'd hoped that this version of the Elizabeth story was going to be a "hidden gem". Unfortunately, it was not. Although there were undoubtedly a few interesting historical details included (together with some terrible moments of "poetic license"), on the whole, it was a very lame and out of date piece, with a lead actress who did not grow during her performance, and who was, in my opinion, quite clearly not up to the task of playing this great part.

A major, MAJOR criticism must be made about the make up. While some characters aged hardly at all, others aged at a ridiculous pace, their faces so puffed out with latex that it made them look like extras in a terrible Star Trek episode from 20 years ago. Such pathetic make up should not be shown on TV today. It was an insult. ... Read More:

A truly terrible film. I still watched it to the end in the same way people watch the wreckage from car accidents. It was un-intentionaly funny, it has the same other worldly view of London that Notting Hill had. The only people i really had any time for were the old couple. All the rest i couldnt care less for. Bunch of pretentious idiots.
That annoying young bloke chatting-up anything that moves, where was his accent from? Ewan mcgregor playing a North London gay, how obvious. The couple being ever so nice and relaxed about their imminent divorce, is that for real?
Basicly i cant understand what the films about, apart from saying; Come up to Hampstead Heath in the summer! its really nice, you may find the odd gay hanging around in the bushes, and meet the odd burk, but apart from ... Read More:
