What is it about films like this? They're based on good source material and attract a good cast but when it finally makes it to the screen it seems as if the furniture is putting in a better performance.

With Possession you're left thinking that this was just another opportunity for Gwyneth to showcase her English accent and nothing more and even she's acting a bit like death warmed over.

There's the usual parade of familiar Brit thesps (Tom Hollander, Toby Stephens, Trevor Eve) all acting up a bit too much in tweeds and making Aaron Eckhart look by turns as if he's not making enough effort or everyone else is really hamming it up. Strangely, the scenes you'd think would be worst, ie the flashbacks to Victorian England ... Read More:

I watched this movie on the back of the great reviews it received in the UK. Being Irish and having an unhealthy interest in movies i felt the urge to see an Irish movie that is being awarded top reviews. Director Lenny Abrahamson, whose debut film Adam & Paul painted a dull authentic portrait of two Dublin junkies; Adam & Paul was minimalist enough to make Samuel Beckett look indulgent. Garage is even more minimalist. But where there is genius in Beckett, there is no genius here in 'Garage'.

Using lengthy, static takes, natural light and silence, and even more silence, the Director presents us with the dim-wit Josie as a modern-day rainman, Dustin Hoffman with an Irish accent. I will not go into the plot, as i feel i do not want to waste ... Read More:

Peter O'Toole is hysterical in this film, and quite easily, is the glue that holds it together (contrary to popular opinion). While this film suffers its share of problems, (such as a few holes in the plot, a little shoddy acting here and there) it makes me laugh as few other movies have. O'Toole's drunken wisdom and fights with his drunken, ghost-talking mother are great. Steve Guttenberg does fine, Daryl Hannah is okay. The Irish country side is lovelyand haunting (incidentally, the movie was filmed in a castle in Limerick,Ireland, where Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes grew up); the set ofthe castle itself is the stuff that fairy tales are made of. The effort that the staff makes to haunt the cynical guests is great, in particular the Lady Godiva/Broggan ... Read More:

This movie wasn't supposed to be exactly a sequel to the earlier film.

You can watch this movie without ever having seen the original, the story line of this movie really doesn't have anything to do with a continuation of the original story line.

According to the Extras making of the movie that's included in the US DVD version, this movie was to be a Dragheart for kid's.

And that's exactly what it is, and does a GREAT job of being just exactly that.

It's rated PG, whereas the original was rated PG-13.

DVD : The Last September [2000] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This is a bit of a gem really if you are familiar with the British class system and have a modicum of knowledge of the struggles engulfing Britain around the turn of the twentieth century. In the film, the concern is primarily for the struggle for Irish independence but there are unspoken undertones of the struggles of women.

At first blush this is Doctor Who meets Harry Potter as the main players come on the scene. Seriously though, it is hard towatch this for a while given the proximity of the stars of the movie similar to that of the Potter movies. A bit of a distraction.

Maggie Smith has made this sort of role her own and in this I am strongly reminded of her portrayal in Private Function, a film which has many parallels here.

Nuns on the Run is a story of two old fashioned gangsters, Charlie & Brian who are fed up with the increasingly violent nature of their business. They decide to retire from it after a bungled robbery in which a fellow robber is killed by accident.
