Really enjoyed this film and I am really am not easy to please (so I am told). No need for me to add words to what other more literate reviewers have said. Really good.

Sense and Sensibility, directed by Ang Lee with a screenplay written by Emma Thompson, made up one part of the holy trinity of Austen productions which aired in 1995. That crowning year for Austenmania began with the BBC production of Persuasion in April 1995 (starring Amanda Root and Ciáran Hinds), followed by the impeccable BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle) in September and October, and was capped off in mid-December by this film version of Sense and Sensibility. Emma Thompson's much-praised screenplay (for which she won an Oscar and a Golden Globe) straddles the difficult divide between pleasing the community of Jane Austen purists and making the 1811 novel appealing to a wider audience of cinema ... I have just finished watching this set. I had seen some early episodes originally but watched all again. It is almost a bit "Lost on Mars" as the early series now do seem dated or rather perfectly portraying that time - the early 1990s. I found myself watching the clothes of DCI Tennison and of course the ageing of her in her character with all the trials and tribulations faced by a woman in the police force and in her personal life. She is a demanding , admirable yet imperfect character and it is heart wrenching to see the last episode when retirement beckons. Absolutely fantastic performance by Helen Mirren and of course the rest who make their characters just so believable!

I'd heard the hype but only watched the film as my wife wanted to see it.There is a lot of bad language in it but that is the make up of the characters in the film. The film reflects the steel industry failing in the UK and the impact it has on the workers losing their jobs.Far from being depressing,as you may expect,it handles the issues with classic comedy and genuine humour. It runs for almost 90 mins, grabs your attention from the first minute and keeps you laughing all the way through with only the odd short-lived serious moment.Don't let the swearing put you off,i was quite happy to let my 16 year old daughter watch and enjoy the film.It is the humour that stays with you.Recommended.

I was hoping for a good British gangster movie but this isn't. A lot of people like Sean Bean but I always got the impression it was somebody acting. The driver was well played and, as usual, the film went up a couple of notches when Tom Wilkinson appeared. As well as the acting the poor script let the film down.

This was an informative and sensitive portrayal of the life of Oscar Wilde. Julian Mitchell weaves in the script lots of Wildean witticisms, and the pity of his Oscar's genius abused comes across. Having read about Wilde's death, I would have liked the film to have ended with that scene. It could have been an English Cyrano de Bergerac.

An enjoyable and rich English film which doesn't quite earn classic status.

A nice change from the usual heaviness of period drama's, I really enjoyed this.

Very light-hearted and some laugh out loud moments. Colin Firth and Rupert Everett work well together and form a funny double act.

I was surprised that I actually liked Reece Witherspoon in this as I usually find her a bit irritating.

Another great performance from Judi Dench, what period drama is complete without her!

Definately worth a watch.

This is not the story of the US war of independence, nor is this the story of the founding fathers. This really is the story of John Adams the second president of the United States.

The mini series goes to great lengths to show the events leading up to 1776 as not just one way. Indeed it's refreshing to show such an even handed account of the causes of the war of revolution. This is underlined by Adams at first despising and then defending a troop of British Red Coats for firing into a crowd of civilians.

The war of independence is of course the backdrop for most of the series and yet very little of it is shown, there is a standout scene where Adams is in a brief sea battle but this is largely a costume drama more in the vein of Barry Lyndon than ... Read More:

I now know a little bit about mixing paint, other than that this was a complete waste of time, very glad I saw it on telly and didn't waste money on it, would rather watch the paint dry (after mixing it). Only gave this 1 star because you have to give it something
