Good God! Russell Crow is one of my favorate actors, and I think this is his best film to date. With a superb supporting cast with the likes of Joaquin Phoenix, Oliver Reed, and Richard Harris. This is a tail of one mans quest to find the man who wronged him. Betrayed by his own emperor, the general turned slave turned gladiator must take on an empire to bring justice to his life.

DVD : Gladiator (3 Disc Extended Special Edition) [2000]
This extended version is a lot denser that what I remembered of the 2000 commercial version. The politics of Rome are explored in a lot more detail, particularly that strange power the Roman Emperor had because of his own praetorian guard that was doing absolutely everything he ordered, and took orders only from the Emperor. At the end, when the Emperor is dead or nearly dead because he is defeated and disarmed, they refuse to obey their own officer. They will obey him only when the sister comes down and legitimizes Maximus. You only meet servile people and even the Senate and the Senators are just as servile out of fear for their welfare. That could be extended to today, even if today in our democratic countries this manipulation of people is less ... Read More:

Hot off filming The Insider, Russell Crowe lost 40lbs of weight and built up his muscles to play thinking women's sex object Maximus, the Roman general turned gladiator, in Hollywood's first true Roman epic for over three decades. Exiled when his mentor, Caesar Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) dies and is succeeded by his power-hungry son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), Maximus, now in exile, trains as a gladiator and swears his revenge - understandable when you consider that Commodus not only kicked Maximus out of the bosom of Rome and tried to kill him, but also had his family murdered.

As you would expect from director Ridley Scott, the movie is epic not only in scale but also in imagery, as the majesty that was Rome is re-created superbly ... Read More:

Okay, okay, I admit it. To all the world I am a Van Damme fan. Yeah, I have been taking the heat on this for a number of years now, but I can't help loving the guy. From the guitar-twanging thrills of HARD TARGET to the vicious (and balletic) brawling of KICKBOXER and BLOODSPORT, 'Van Dammage' has constantly entertained and kept my faith in bad action cinema alive. Even though he seems to be appearing in Direct-to-video movies now, he still has the knack for picking interesting riffs on the action genre. Check out his collaborations with two of Hong Kongs' finest: Tsui Hark (the underrated DOUBLE TEAM and KNOCK OFF) and Ringo Lam (MAXIMUM RISK and the killer comeback movie REPLICANT). These movies have shown his ability to choose difficult and 'Non-Hollywood' ... Read More:

Police forensic examiner Sam Rivers(Tory Kittles) is called away from the case he is working on, to examine a mutilated corpse that has been found in the Louisiana swamps. Rivers grew up there, so he is needed for his local expertise. He teams up with marine biologist Mary Callahan(China Chow) as there are large unidentifyed teeth marks on the corpse. Together they travel to where Rivers grew up to try to discover what was responsible. What they find is a new mutated species of amphibious fish, with a very large appetite.
This starts off very enjoyably with a nice array of believable characters, and a good deal of atmosphere too. It does come a little unstuck when the director starts to concentrate a bit too much on the next elaborate death scene, at the expense ... Read More:

Well, I hardly know where to start. Wooden acting, the flimsiest story line, dull as dishwater. The 'ogre' looked like something out of a 1950's horror movie. It took absolutely ages for the film to get down to a confrontation with the ogre which lasted a whole 20 seconds, that was followed by a hugely impressive ending - the best effect they could manage was a simple fade (it just vanished slowly) to show it had been killed. The most frightening part of this was the fact that some nut decided it warranted an 18 certificate. If you're looking for a way to throw away some money, this fits the bill. Otherwise, I wouldn't touch this load of tripe with a 20 foot barge pole.

the only thing I can say about this film is after about 10 mins I fell asleep, and woke up during the end credits. I thought the actors would have been better but with such an awful storyline you can't expect anything else really.
