DVD : The Pirates of Penzance (REGION 1) (NTSC)
If someone has told me a few months ago that I would be continuously humming Gilbert & Sullivans music, I would have told them not to be so daft. I love classical music but G&S's operetta's were definitely not for me.

BUT....then came Essgee's version onto our TV screens. I decided to purchase a copy and I have watched this DVD time and time again. Each time I find that there is something I missed the time before, something new to laugh at. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who loves music and most importantly loves to laugh. I have since bought Essgee's The Mikado and H.M.S.Pinafore. Money very well spent. I cannot decide which of the three I enjoy most, so I am therefore watching each in turn, over and over again. ... While Masamune Shirow is perhaps best known for Ghost in the Shell, Dominion was the first of his Manga to be translated into Anime. While the original OVA follows the manga (though only 4 of the 6 episodes were made), this follows the manga's style with lots of action and humour.

If you like Shirow's more recent works, then you really should watch this. While less "real world" then either Appleseed or GitS, this is still an excellent series. Dominion (both the original oav and New Dominion) have some of the best one-liners in animé including the classic by Benten (Britain in the OAV) "We put the Terror back into inTerrorgation!"

So if you like comedy and action, this is an essential purchase.

Having watched the series of X (which is amazing, but sadly hasn't been brought out on region 2), I thought I'd invest in the film version, especially as it was only £3.50 and I could have it as a treat after finishing a pretty lengthy exam.
It wasn't as rewarding as I hoped for. The characters, which I had come to know and love throughout the series, were now paper-thin and the plot was weak. Understandably with so many characters they couldn't go into all of their backstories, but, given that the film is a pale 93 mins, they could have well fleshed some of them out. The odd pacing and plot holes means the viewer is left just as bemused as Kamui is. If I hadn't seen the series, I would've been completely lost! Furthermore, the animation is ... Read More:

DVD : Teletubbies - Again Again! [1997]
Unlike the other Teletubbies videos/DVDs my son has seen, "Teletubbies - Again Again!" took quite a while for my 2-year-old to get into. There are a few sequences that don't hold much interest for him, such as the bit where Laa Laa asks the others to play with her indoors (they want to play outdoors). However, there are two sequences that he has grown to love, namely Dipsy doing his special dance (my son has developed his own version of Dipsy's dance and it's quite a sight to behold!) and the clip of children making playdough. It's the pull of these two sections that keeps my son watching the whole DVD, even though it has been known that he may leave the room (never happened with the other Tubbies videos/DVDs) - this mostly happens if the "Teletubbies Everywhere" ... It's really very sweet having an extremely positive and loving atmosphere. The teletubbies are not grown-ups and probably not even human so they have to learn everything from the beginning. They can't even speak like grown ups which seems to be no problem for children, egging them on to experiment with their own syllables and sounds. (Children are always drawn to charachters that resemble children.)
It's slow moving and gentle, which may be boring and incomprehensible to adults but is benficial for small kids who are often overwhelmed by the imformation overload, with lots of repetition so inexperienced minds have a chance take it all in.

The only My son needed for the set. He did not move out of his seat for the whole video. Excellent use of colours and one of the best ones. Plenty of learning material and does not repeat material as much as the newest video.

My ten month old (fussy eater) daughter loves this dvd. It keeps her enthralled and sat in her high chair whilst I'm feeding her instead of screaming and thrashing to get out! She's even started to express preferences for certain dances and waves hello and bye bye to the teletubbies. Look out for the skirt dance!
