Frequently hilarious, never boring, unpredictable and well-written, filmed, directed and acted. But it stretched credibility a little too far and if, like me, you don't approve of beauty pageants for young girls, and of the bad swearing in the presence of children, you still won't be overly impressed by what on the face of it is advertised as something of a family movie!

What makes this version of Emma enjoyable is the exquisite costumes, locations and colour. I love the portrayals of Miss Bates, Mr & Mrs Elton & Mrs Weston (or poor Miss Taylor). Gwyneth Paltrow makes a pleasant Emma, but although I love her as an actress, I don't think she has really identified with the character of Emma. I am not convinced of Harriet Smith or Frank Churchill either, they are just not authentic to the characters. Mr Knightley is just about passable. The main problem with this is that the story has been severely condensed and I feel alot of the important scenes in the book have been dropped, which has greatly reduced the effect of the story. The TV version starring Kate Beckinsale & Mark Strong have much stronger ... Read More:

This film fooled me into thinking that Bruce Willis was alive and then it tries to make out he was a ghost all along! So how come he didnt walk through a wall or fall through the floor? No, this is silly. If ghosts did exist they would not wear clothes or go around scaring people. For a more realistic film of ghosts - which don't exist - watch Ghostbusters or Ghost. Avoid this one at all costs.

It's only recently that i've seen Muriel's wedding, and i loved it to bits from start to finish. Its basically about a misfit Abba loving geek in her twenties that is going nowhere in life, but dreams of getting married one day, her popular friends have dumped her and it seems it's over for her until she meets Rhonda, and it takes off from there, they soon become best friends and find that they both have plenty in common, but the fun doesn't last long, Rhonda gets confined to a wheelchair due to the discovery that she has cancer, but things are still looking up for Muriel as she will soon be having a `fake' marriage to help a world champion, super fit swimmer win. It looks like her prayers have been answered (obviously not for him who is less than keen!). ... Read More:

Having bought this DVD a couple of years ago because it came in a set with Love Actually and Notting Hill, I have only just gotten round to watching it. And my have I been missing out? About a boy is an incredible film and will appeal to all ages and both genders. Great family viewing as it is not littered with swearing like the majority of films around and no cringy 'oh my god i can't believe i'm watching this with my children/ parents' moments!
All in all a fantastic performance from Hugh Grant, and a wonderful feel-good comedy (which is actually funny) that i am sure to watch again and again... just maybe not as much as i watch Love Actually cos that would be impossible!
Highly recommended

'Parked uneasily between sensitive indie and studio chick flick, Lajos Koltai's Evening makes star-studded hash of Susan Minot's beautifully written, if emotionally constricted, novel about a terminally ill woman trying to wrestle meaning out of the shards of her memories. Floating in and out of delirium in her Cambridge, Massachusetts, home, Ann Lord -- a former singer, twice married to men she didn't fully love and vice versa -- is cared for by her two daughters, played in the movie by the world's least likely siblings, Natasha Richardson and Toni Collette." Ella Taylor

Something is missing from this film. We are left searching for a memory that will organize the fragments of Ann Lord's life. Vanessa Redgrave plays a woman dying. Her two daughters, ... Read More:

A great film. Not a cryer normally I was wet-eyed at the end of this one. The film concerns the relationship between two sisters; the wayward pretty one and the older sister/clever lawyer, that breaks down allowing each of them to develop that part of their character normally fulfilled by the other one. The lawyer finds a man and the wayward one takes on responsibility. In doing so they also find the missing bits of their family and themselves. As soon as it finished I wanted to watch it again. Highly recommended. Especially good for anyone who ever envied their siblings - you will get this film like no-one else.

I can never make my mind up if I like this film or not, it's certainly not 'easy' viewing, you have to concentrate on it. There's more than a nod to Oscar Wilde in it - if you read the Ellmann bio you'll find much of the script is lifted straight out of it. And the whole theory that homosexuals are in some way 'aliens' sent to earth to make society advance faster is a little far-fetched, although one can see where they're going with it. I do like the historical scope of the film though, the move from the 1850s through to the 1990s, signified in the way all flamboyant celebrities seem to be linked by an intergalatic hatpin! It's a film with a huge vision, but ultimately probably not a strong enough script to see it through; in places it seems to get muddled and lost in its ... Read More:
