Strongman and enforcer Jack Carter (Michael Caine) returns to his native North East (of England) to investigate the suspicious death of his brother. Here he encounter a world of sleaze, booze, violence, casual sex and people in search of easy money.

Hard to call it a classic early British gangster film given that they were so few around, but more a cracking thriller that makes full use of its cast, plot and (unusual) Newcastle Upon Tyne location.

Writer-Director Mike Hodges wanted violence with reality and he delivers it with real punch. Unlike most thrillers bystanders are not immune from the action and at various stages harsh punishment is handed out for minor crimes by anti-hero Caine.

Caine underplays his hardman ... Read More:

The dvd boxset is great and for the price is worth it! The first film is excellent and is played out well by the actors and actresses! It is a fun film with the Classic best british car to date, the Mini! Shame that the sequal to it was never produced, but the re make of the film I thought was just average and the story line could've been made better. I thought the car scenes could've been longer and the ending a little better, but still, it was decent enough to watch!

Warning - plot spoilers ahead.
The first 20 minutes of When a Stranger Calls are excellent. Really quite tense and frightening. I was quite surprised at this, due to its age. It's very similar to Black Christmas which kind of detracts from it a little bit, but it's done so well it shouldn't put you off too much.
Equally, the final 15 minutes or so, when the killer returns to stalk the girl from the beginning of the film is also tense and exciting.

It's the middle bit that stands out for me, as a bit of a let down. This is the bulk of the film but it is badly written and acted. After seeing what the killer did to the 2 kids in the beginning of the film, the detective leaves the force and vows to get revenge on the killer. This seems ... Read More:

DVD : The Lost Continent/The Reptile [1966] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
There really is no logical reason for packing "The Lost Continent" and "The Reptile" together was you get beyond the fact they are both Hammer films produced two years apart. After all, they are set in different centuries on different continents and to not have an actor or monster in common. "The Reptile" was filmed on the same lot as "The Plague of the Zombies," so that could have made sense as a pairing, but logic does not appear to be the rationale here. I mean, "The Reptile" was part of a double-bill with "Rasputin, the Mad Monk," which does not make a whole lot of sense either. However, this is really a moot point because I picked up this set because I wanted "The Lost Continent," a B-movie that made an impression on me when I was a kid and saw it in the theater. ... DVD : The Lost Continent [1968]
I love this film. Its really got everything that any self respecting b-movie lover could want from a film. An ocean coated with carnivorous seaweed, lots of ropey but charming monsters, a lost race of people living on a Spanish Galleon stranded in the afore mentioned sea,and many other delights.
Anyway, the story concerns a group of shifty passengers aboard the creaky old ship of equally shifty Captain Lansen (Eric Porter). They find themselves in big trouble when the majority of the crew mutiny and abandon ship after discovering that Lansen is carrying a cargo of explosives.
The passengers, Lansen and his remaining crew then find themselves trapped in a sea of flesh eating foliage, and soon come attack from Spanish soldiers using helium baloons as a means ... Read More:
