At my English prep school in the mid-80s the Day of the Jackal was approved viewing for the boys, despite its adult themes, because it offered up a role model of how an English gentleman should behave. Edward Fox is perfect in the lead role: impossibly dapper and handsome, emotionally cold, well organised, hates the French and travels in style. The Day of the Jackal is a beautifully shot film, full of glossy mid-70s Europe, summer, good clothes, cigarettes and hotels. It tells of a cat and mouse game between an assassin and the French security services out to get that assassin, but with little information to go on. I have found this to be one of few films that reward repeated viewing. Enjoy.

Good acting but uninteresting story. Not much happens and its very talky. Judging from the cover and the casting I expected a fun comedy but "There's a Girl in My Soup" feels more of an uninspired drama-comedy, with very few funny moments (I can only think of one, and I just finished watching it). The acting is good, as expected from Hawn and Sellers, but their talents are wasted. Not recommended.

Now I disagree with the previous reviewer who says that this isn't as good as the original. THIS IS LOADS BETTER! The main reason for this is because it keeps from using too many silly dinosour puppets and uses more human monsters, the naga warriors. Add a busty cave girl and a young Sarah Douglas and you have a good old fashioned adventure. Perfect Saturday afternoon viewing.

DVD : Sunday Bloody Sunday [1971] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
"Sunday, Bloody Sunday" was one of the most acclaimed adult dramas of the early 70s, and one of the first major films to address gay relationships. Murray Head stars as a young hippie in simultaneous relationships with physician Peter Finch and businesswoman Glenda Jackson. Finch and Jackson know about each other, and they even share some mutual acquaintances. Needless to say, even though Finch and Jackson are completely enamored of the young man, they're also both frustrated with his inability to give more or commit himself. The film explores these relationships over a tumultuous week.

The film was directed by John Schlesinger as his follow-up to the Oscar-winning "Midnight Cowboy." It's a solid drama of obvious interest for its early, ... Read More:

DVD : Operation Amsterdam [1959] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This is an old movie, but if you haven't seen it, please do! The story, which is true, centres round an extraordinary attempt to persuade the leading Dutch diamond merchants to send their stocks to England before the Nazis seize Amsterdam in 1940. The special agents landed to cary out the task are working against the clock as the enemy approach. They have not only to persuade the merchants but somehow break into the time-locked vaults, all the while evading or fighting off Nazi sympathisers among the Dutch troops.

Nailbiting. The director has used a wonderul ploy of showing clock after clock - car clocks, wristwatches, office clocks, etc -to rack up the suspense.

There are also genuine moments of pathos showing the effect of Nazi bombs ... Read More:
