Spartacus is perhaps Stanley Kubrick's oddest film, in that it is 'normal'. It is a Roman epic, one o0f many produced around the 1950s and early 1960s but is one of the better ones. It does not quite measure up to Ben Hur but is still very good.

Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons et al deliver great performances and the battle scenes are more gory than you would expect, and of course there is the now legendary 'I'm Spartacus, I'M Spartacus, I'M Spartacus' scene. It makes for a very entertaining few hours.

The film falls short of the great man's other work because of two points: Firstly, it could have been directed by anyone; the obcessive perfectionism and innovatism appear absent it what is a more standard epic. Also, the dialogue ... Read More:

A real big disappointment. The Picture is cut on both sides. Originally the move was widescreen. What you here see is the 4:3 Version of the film.
So it lacks much of the right and left side. Not enough, the movie is also cut on head and foot to make you think it is 16:9. I own the 4:3 Version and the Widescreen Version recorded von TV put with poor Picturequality. Also has this Version no subtitles or other languages.
Many of you have long waited for this wonderful Knight Movie with Tony Curtis and now this. It is a pity that the pruducer always more often cut 4:3 Version to make you think you buy 16:9

This movie is noir, but with a little more edge. The only film like it I can think of is the classic Double Indemnity, not alike in storyline, but similar in style and attitude. They both have a very suave screenplay, choc full of sharp and streetwise parlance. Like the earlier, Ray Chandler scripted movie, this Cliff Odets piece oozes cool but with a little more attitude. It is cynical, worldly and downright memorable. The dark b&w photography suits the mood of the picture perfectly and the finest performance of Tony Curtis' career just falls out of him as if he knows that sort of character so well. It doesn't aim too high in movie terms, it just deals with its tight little story, while saying alot about the world the main characters inhabit and then finishes ... Read More:

Wow!
THE Hercule Poirot himself (A.k.a. Sir Peter Ustinov) in action! That's really something to watch and fully enjoy! I think Ustinov was realy born for this role (so sad he passed away, but, anyway, we don't live forever). Together with "Appointment With Death" (another great DVD) can make you stick in your armchair for several hours, not worrying where did you put the remote...

Fun, intriguing, a bit eerie, and a little bit silly, "The List of Adrian Messenger" was, in 1963, a bit of a throwback to 1940s-style British mysteries, with some added promotional gimmickry prevalent in late-'50s and early-'60s pop cinema.

I first saw this film on TV as a child and was fascinated (and a little creeped out) by the disguises -- particularly by the removal of a false eye early in the film. (Sorry for the spoiler.) Being a young movie fan I was familiar with all the Hollywood "guest stars" purported to be littered throughout the film in disguise, and had fun trying to spot them (I say "purported," since their presence is disputed -- read on).

Another look at "Adrian Messenger" with a bit more mature eye confirms it to be an ... Read More:

Contrary to some reviews, the episode 'Greensleeves' has been sourced from an inferior original master, which is a pity given the stunning quality of the rest.

Not the end of the world, I guess, just a shame.

DVD : The Great Race [1965] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
I've always liked this film and thought it a great pity there had been no Region 2 release on DVD.
This cracking tale of dastardly deeds and deceit is a marvellous race to reach the next gag. And there is never long to wait!!
Through a plethora of cultures and engaging social backgrounds, the tale never seems to peak, until the fantastic pie fight.
A well re-mastered film, although the soundtrack did seem to fade in places.
However, top marks.
