Film review of Matilda (1996)
Star rating-\\\gg

Matilda was originally written as a children¡¦s novel by Roald Dahl (tales of the unexpected) in 1988. His wry wit and humour certainly makes the book an enjoyable read and this humour still shows in Danny DeVito¡¦s movie version of the novel with a contrast of both American and English actors.

The film is about a young girl called Matilda played wonderfully by Mara Wilson (Miss Doubtfire). Though at the time, Wilson was fairly new to the acting scene; her acting skills still comes across as charming.

Another great actor in the film is the director, Danny DeVito (Mars Attacks), who also plays both the narrator and Matilda¡¦s father. DeVito is both ... Read More:

Batman has always been a vastly over-rated movie and I find it difficult to understand how it garnered such positive reviews on it's release . Having watched this recently on TV it seems like a good time to look again at this disappointing film.
It has many flaws but chief among these is the casting of 80's "it girl" Kim Basinger. She almost single handedly ruins this film with her unbelievably poor performance, coming across like some am dram second rater. Michael Keaton does some of his best work but is scuppered in the Batman role by a Batsuit which allows extremely limited movement of body and none of neck whatsoever. He walks around like he has a washboard stuck up his back, completely not his fault I understand. Jack Nicholson's Joker is ... Read More:

There's no doubt that this film is worthy of cult status, and to many this is one of those all-time-classics. For me though, it's a good film, but doesn't quite hit the mark as a great film.

Some elements of the film are beautifully done; the generic packaging of food products, the bleak urban feel, and the seemingly apathy to violence and death make for a great dystopian atmosphere. This means that although the film is filmed/set in the 1980's, it has a futuristic look to it, almost like Mad Max.

The dystopia is developed further as the main characters have little or no ambition, whenever someone discusses what they want from life it's never anything more than committing crime or becoming a `fry chef' in a fast food place. The masses ... Read More:

It must have looked like a winner on paper - the foremost action hero of his age - true life story of bounty hunter, car chases, human story, terrific cast with a real chance for acting... It's not a disaster, but it's a limp effort at either a character piece, a bio, or an action movie even though it has elements of all three.
The movie covers a period in the life of the real life bounty hunter (supposedly the last...) of `Papa' Thorsen. His exploits catching various guys on the run, is contrasted with his life at home where he not only has a soft spot for lost causes, but has a beautiful wife pregnant with his child. Some semblance of drama to drive the movie along is given by one of McQueen's ex catches getting out of jail and threatening to kill him (yawn). ... Read More:

Mitch Robbins (Billy Crystal) is going through a mid-life crisis and is yearning to just get away from the family and work and go away with some friends. Mitch finally is able to find a get away out west on the plains, a cattle drive vacation. Mitch would help drive cattle from new Mexico to Colorado. Accompanying Mitch are his two friends, Phil and Ed (Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby) who are also down on there luck.

Things don't go well at first, the cattle leader, Curly (Jack Palance) isn't well-liked by most of the other cattle drivers but Mitch establishes an unlikely relationship with him. As the group drives cattle, with probably the strangest group of people you could imagine, more issues and morals are presented such as: friendship, respect, and family.

The film stars Jack Nicholson as a detective in post-war California.
While working on a case involving adultery, the husband (Keitel) kills the other man involved and things get complicated. The plot is then
littered with twists and turns in something of the style of Chinatown but with nowhere near the same elegance of execution.
While it does pick up after about an hour and has some interesting scenes there are also some embarrassing flashbacks to
the first film which are scrappily tacked on to link the two
and strange camera angles which seem to be added in for no reason. To put it plainly, it's badly shot and directed.

Watching an old and unfit Nicholson run in one scene while dressed in a similar suit as he wore in the first film as a young man acts well ... Read More:
