Watched this film on a flight to Las Vegas which gave it some entertaiment value. Although it is highly unbelivable and its all been done before, no better that your average rom-com. As long as you bring your imagination with you it is fun. Bonus points for Aston Kutcher he's always entertaining. Average film worth watching on a girly night in but don't go out of your way. Ending bit is quite funny though.

Once Upon A Time In America [1984]
THE LEADING ACTOR IN SERGIO LEONE'S DREAMING EPIC IS NOT JAMES WOODS NOR IS IT ELIZABETH McGovern; NOR FOR ALL THE EXCELLENCE IN HIS PERFORMANCE, IS IT ROBERT de NIRO. THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE FILM IS 'TIME'! THE THEME IS ONE THAT HAS ALWAYS FASCINATED MR.LEONE. ONE COULD POINT TO SOME OF THE MORE OBVIOUS SYMBOLS IN HIS EARLIER FILMS LIKE THE HANDLESS CLOCKS THAT LITTER THE LANDSCAPE OF 'ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST' OR THE MUSICAL FOB-WATCH IN 'FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE' THAT WAS A CONTINUOUS REMINDER OF RAPE AND REVENGE AND WAS USED TO TIME THE FINAL SHOOT-OUT!
IN 'ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA', THE ITEM WHICH FIRST BRINGS THE YOUNG NOODLES(de NIRO) AND MAX(JAMES WOODS) TOGETHER IF THEIR LIFE TIME ... Read More:

It is a great surprise to discover that a musical can celebrate 'Hippy' beliefs and still maintain a dark shadow. A draft-card is burned at the beginning of the film; the spectre of Vietnam is ever-present.

'Hair' is at once a study of class, individuality, 'Counter-culture' beliefs, gender-equality and anti-war activism. Added to this potent mixture is the symbolism of growing one's hair; alluding to personal assertiveness, freedom, natural beauty and individuality. Near the end of the film there is a touching scene of one of the hippies getting his hair cut. The mood is tense and a portent of tragedy looms.

The music is fabulous: percolating rhythms and tunes that stick in your head. Sometimes the lyrics are rattled off ... Read More:

I can't believe this fim has so many positive reviews, I tried to sit through it last night and gave up after an hour.

If you're expecting someting in the Reservoir Dogs mould you'll be sorely dissapointed, beacuse the film is just dire. And as for the use of language, when you can actually understand what they're saying it's just annoying.

Jimmy the Saint's love story is also a completely unecessary addition to the film, and only adds to its cheesiness.

Give It A Miss....

The film is, brilliant in words but unfortunately I will have to give it one star because the DVD case was covered in sticky stuff and the DVD itself was scratched, for this reason, buy it somewhere else...

6.Once Upon A Time In America : The Movie & More (2 Disc Special Edition) [1984] starring: Robert De Niro, James Woods, Elizabeth McGovern, Joe Pesci, Burt Young

DVD : Once Upon A Time In America : The Movie & More (2 Disc Special Edition) [1984]
This is Sergio Leone's last and perhaps best film. Epic in length, scope and cinematography "Once upon a time in America" follows a group of kids and their rise to fully fledged gangsters.

Running at almost 4 hours and including an interval the story covers childhood, their 20's/30's and Noodles (De Niro) 70's.

The story is plays with time, cutting between 3 periods in cleverely crafted arcs. When originally released in the US the distributor re-arranged the whole film chronologically, destroying the suspense of the story. Here it is shown in it's proper, full length edit.

This really is cinema at it's best. Yes it's long and may take a couple of sittings, but once finished you know you've seen a film and a great one at that.

As a child in Ireland, Frankie McGuire (Brad Pitt) sees his dad gunned down for his involvement with the Irish Republican Army (IRA). As an adult, McGuire has followed in his dad's footsteps. When the IRA decides it needs more firepower, they hatch a plan that involves McGuire going to the United States to pick up a shipment of Stinger missiles. Through American IRA contacts, McGuire adopts a false identity and housing is arranged with a non-involved Irish family headed by New York City cop Tom O'Meara (Harrison Ford).

There is an impression that The Devil's Own is an action film. The Internet Movie Database has it listed as "Action/Drama/Thriller". Although there are some action elements in the film, this is really a tragic drama, almost in a classical sense, ... Read More:

First saw this back in 1989ish on BBC 2 as a 12 year old and loved it then. Only seen it a couple of times since and, seeing as it feels like it will never come out on region 2, i went and bought this.
Film isnt hysterically funny but it will make you laugh. v v v entertaining, great to look at, great score, great direction.
Extras are brilliant - 1hr 40 documentary, lots of deleted scenes, extras and home movies.
This new directors cut extends the movies running time to 2hrs 40. Some of the new scenes work, others are just plain dull. But its just great to actually find a copy of this movie.
Still could do with a region 2 edition but for the moment this is the best we can get here in the UK.

I have a huge soft spot for this film, which I went to see as a 9th birthday treat. The original Jack Higgins book is desperately unlikely, and probably stems from some theoretical research into possible commando raids rather than the superbly melodramatic discovery of a hidden gravestone...

Anyway, this is great WW2 hokum with a great cast and director who keep a firm grasp of their jobs all the way through some outrageous lines...Caine as the steely eyed German (not Nazi) para; a chilling Himmler played to perfection by Donald Pleasance; Donald Sutherland as the animal taming member of the 'OiRA'; Jean Marsh as the sleeper agent; my favourite Larry Hagman as a Ranger Colonel... great stuff. There is a well-choreographed shootout too, and you do root for the Germans ... Read More:
