This was a firm favourite of mine as a teenager, due mainly to the plethora of brilliantly quotable lines (teenagers,eh?) But it is still just as original, funny, strange and clever as it ever was, with a great cast of actors, the role of a lifetime for Nicolas Cage, which i'm sure helped him break out and be considered a very versatile actor, and of course the ever fantastic Holly Hunter, plus some wonderful supporting players. The Cohen brothers may of gone on and honed their craft as film makers, but they have never beaten Raising Arizona for laughs.

This is such a well-crafted suspense thriller that it's almost as much a pleasure to watch the third or fourth time as it is the first. Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown) is a special effects man much in demand in Hollywood. He not only is a gifted professional in the trade, he's probably the main reason for the success of such exploitation films he's worked on as I Dismember Mama, Planet of the Female Mummies, Song of the Succubus and Rock-A-Die-Baby. Examples from these movies litter his apartment. He's recruited by Agent Lipton of the Justice Department's Witness Protection Program to stage the fake but public murder of a mafia boss, Nick DeFranco (Jerry Orbach), who will spill his guts to the Feds. All goes well until, after the event, Lipton (Cliff De Young), tries ... Read More:

Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon burn up the screen. Costner in particular is excellent, showing a knack for verbal comedy and physical heroism that he put on a shelf until "Tin Cup." And Tim Robbins turns in a memorable performance as Nuke Laloosh.

I see no reason in going into the plot details, as everyone who has seen the film knows what "Bull Durham" is about, and those who haven't seen it are in for a wonderful treat

It's a well known story about a well known legend, played by a half decent actor - but who told Quaid to play JLL as a halfwit from beginning to end?

I cringed every time he was on screen and it made the whole film an effort to watch, rather than the fun experience it shold have been.

I've only given it one star because Winona Ryder was good as the young wife.

By the time you've got to read my review you'll know the story. It's a great film, and was Arnie's first foray into comedy and is directed by Ivan (Ghostbusters) Reitman.

My only complaint is NOT with the film but with the DVD itself. I would have given this a five star rating had it not been for the fact that this film is not shown in Widescreen and is Pan and Scan and there is only the trailer as a special feature. Save your pennies and wait until the Special Edition is realised, it'll be worth it.

DVD : Big Blonde [1980] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Dorothy Parker's 1929 short story, transformed into a stage play under the direction of Kirk Browning in 1980, loses much of its impact in the transformation. Though the script, written by Ellen M. Violett, stays close to the action of the story, the sense of time and place--the Roaring Twenties in New York--is lost in this production. Parker wrote this story with mordant humor and malicious wit, presenting a free-spirited model who married, suddenly discovered that she loved being a housewife, lost her husband when she lost her excitement, and descended into alcohol, drugs, and eventually a suicide attempt (as in her own life). Parker's sense of irony and her implied criticism of women who allow themselves to be victims create a bleak short story, to some extent a morality ... Read More:
