This film, initially discovered part-way through on a rare French TV showing, must certainly rank as one of my favourites. It is one that I can watch over and over again without feeling bored. Everything is great in this film - the actresses, young, old and even the small children, the beautiful scenery, the emotions, a few comic moments to relieve the tension and definitely not least, the wonderful music. The final scene never fails to start a tear welling in my eye. I don't know if it is a faithful representation of the book which inspired it, but it stands up on its own two feet as a marvellous piece of cinema. I would certainly recommend it.

I have read (I am actually reading "The Man with the Golden Gun") the whole Ian Fleming works this summer, and a good decision it was...
Perhaps 4,5 stars would be a better rating, but the Japanese plot idea (so much BEFORE Clancy or Crichton ever thought about it!) is a must read (always having in mind when the book was written -middle sixties-), the setting of Blofeld is probably the weakest in the trilogy... Hemingway meets E.A.Poe...
I love the minus gadgets and more stamina balance, and the fact Bond REALLY is made from flesh&blood... at least on paper.
I would recommend the experience of reading the books to anyone having enjoyed a film of the saga (or even not... still a better approach probably).
The end is quite puzzling but ... Read More:

This is a poignant film about today's world and how change can come to a country, any country. In this case we are dealing with China. Corrupted people are framing up an American TV man in order to prevent a contract being signed that does not go in the right direction for their interests. The point is that the corrupted and plotting official is the son of a highly respected man, a son who was educated in the West and brought back his corruption, or at least a good knowledge and know how about it, from his foreign sojourn. He is using the opaque situation in changing China to cover up his dealings and has a little group of plotters and accomplices to manage his operations. But the film tries to show how the Chinese today are realizing from their own experience and ... Read More:

The story of how Gladys Aylward went from parlour maid to heroic missionary in 1940s China is well known, but the film bears watching time and again. There are outstanding performances by Robert Donat as the Mandarin - seriously ill, this was his last film - and of course the wonderful Ingrid Bergman, ably supported by Curt Jurgens as the army colonel. Other fine assets are the script by Alan Burgess, who wrote the original book, "The Small Woman", Freddie Young's sweeping cinematography (you would hardly believe it was made in the Welsh mountains, not China) and Malcolm Arnold's stirring musical score, including the famous children's marching theme and "Knick-knack" song.

All in all a beautiful film, emotional but not sentimental, uplifting and inspiring.

5.The Brides Of Fu Manchu [1966] starring: Christopher Lee, Douglas Wilmer, Heinz Drache, Marie Versini, Howard Marion-Crawford

a reasonable sequel to the classic first film, douglas wilmer isn't as good at playing nayland smith like nigel green, who is sorely missed.
good scenes to be sure, christopher lee is still in the series thankfully but the pace tends to drag along and the plot is rather silly.
still better than the cut-price co-productions that would follow.

DVD : The Face Of Fu Manchu [1965]
Easily the best film adapted from Sax Rohmer's stories of intrigue and adventure, The Face Of Fu Manchu is the kind of well-made thriller that British studios seemed to produce so well in the 1960s. In one of his best performances, Christopher Lee portrays the fiendish Oriental villain with grace and impassive menace, and he is aided by the skillful, economic direction of Don Sharp (surely one of the most underrated directors of the era). The chintzy sets, art direction, and classy music go down a treat, and best of all is the script, written by producer Harry Allan Towers under the pseudonym Peter Welbeck. Deftly using the most effective aspects of the Fu Manchu books, his story manages to jetison the more unsavoury aspects of Rohmer's writing (ie, the blatant racism and casual sexism), fashioning ...
