This film was exciting when I saw it in 1956 in Holland, and it is just as exciting now. How can one miss with the superb talent of Michael Redgrave, the stirring music of Eric Coates, and a gripping yarn that happens to be true? Much of the fascination of this film stems from its depiction of Barnes Wallis's process of planning and perfecting the bouncing bomb, and persuading Whitehall to go along with his eccentric idea. Equally interesting are the various makeshift devices, such as the range-finding lights and the home-made bombsight.

"The Dam Busters" tells the story of ingenuity and courage during wartime. In the wrong hands, such a topic might be heavy handed, but one of the things that British filmmakers of the 1950s did ... Read More:

These are three of the best War film ever.
The Dambusters. I realy bought this set for this film, the true story of Barns Wallace and the famous raid on German Dams in WW2.
The Cruel Sea. The story of the Men who crewed A destroyer in early WW2.
The Colditz Story. Tales from the famous WW2 prison camp.

These are great films. even in black and white.

Mad as a strange cheese, this movie is scriptwriter Woody Allen's first screenplay, so that goes a long way to explain the complete unevenness and disorganistion of this movie. It took him 15 years of practice after this to actually produce anything resembling a cohesive, non-fragmentary narrative and a further five to stop telling the same jokes, so really, if you want to watch this film because you're a Sellers, O'Toole or Romy Schneider fan (she is delectable in this) then you will simply have to bare all the worst excesses of this man's craft. Of course he also makes it hilarious most of the time, and this does compensate for the very bumpy ride. He has a strong part himself and he made sure he would have some sort of film career with a full on slapstick ... Read More:

I love this film. A small band of disparate people struggle to survive a journey to safety on board an ancient engine and carriage, among them a small boy, who, because he is the spiritual leader of hundreds of people, is threatened by a different sect. It is a beautifully shot and well made film about turn of the century India.

Four of the greatest ever British WWII films and what a joy to see them in such a clear and high quality format. As must be expected in films that are now more or less 50 years old there are a few small flaws in places on the original prints that were used for this collection. It must be hard to find mint quality at this late date but who cares? Mine looked and sounded just great even after being converted to North American format. The PAL originals must be better still. It's a dramatic improvement over the VHS taped versions. All four of these favourite films are based on true incidents. The Dam Busters and The Colditz Story are faithful renderings of real-life incidents. The Cruel Sea is from the novel based on Nicholas Monsarrat's naval experiences and Ice Cold In ... Read More:

OK....a formidable collection of top-notch productions of plays by the undisputed master of mid-19th century drama. The 'latest' production here is a 1992 'Doll's House' with Trevor Eve and Juliet Stevenson...the earliest is a fifties 'Master Builder' with Donald Wolfit. Inbetween we get Eileen Atkins in 'Lady From The Sea', Hopkins and Rigg superb in a great production of 'Little Eyolf', an 'interesting' (ie, not totally satisfactory) updating o 'Enemy Of The People' to 1970s Scotland and Judi Dench in 'Ghosts'. Also included are a good cross-section of radio plays, the earliest being Ralph Richardson in a war-time 'Peer Gynt' broadcast and included are the rarely seen 'Pretenders' and never-seen 'Emperor And Galilean'.

What more could we want, you might ... Read More:
