A bold and colourful film about the audacious and uncompromising Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, from her tram accident at 18, which left her with excruciating chronic pain, through her many affairs with both men and women, including Leon Troksy, and her tumultuous but enduring marriage to Mexican muralist, Diego Riviera.

Her life was full of circumstance and the pain and tragedies that she endured are imbued in her vibrant paintings.

Here, director Julie Taymore shows she is an extremely talented and accomplished director, displaying her artistic vision and skill, making fantastic use of colour, art and music.

Visually resplendent, this is an alluring film.

Dustin Hoffman's performance as the autistic man earns the two stars I've given this film. Otherwise, however, I find it objectionable. It is true that, for reasons still unknown, there are so-called idiots savants, whose disability in one area is balanced out by some splendid capacity in another.
In reality, such abilities are extremely rare. Films such as Rain Man tend to propagate the notion that a defect in one area will have some compensation in another. The truth is that Nature's not as nice as that, far from it. And from that comes disappointment in a disabled person's relatives.
I am disabled myself - with epilepsy, not autism - and am familiar and/or fluent with several languages, including early Greek. Epilepsy, however, ... Read More:

Brilliant films, easily two of my favourites. But this DVD version is disappointment, How Could They Have Cut the Limo scenes...
I thought one of the benefits of DVD was to put more in not take away,

Having just watched this film for the first time, I think a good way to describe it is to compare it to a gig. To start off there are two pretty irrelevant stories by two unknown directors which both leave you thinking 'what's this all about?', kind of like the support act. But they do set the scene for the second half of the movie, showing that Roth as the bellhop is having a real bizarre night. Then the headliners come in, Rodriguez and Tarantino, both producing hugely entertaining and enjoyable short stories which make you really pleased you watched the film. The performances by Roth, Tarantino and Jennifer Beals also help the job... definitely worth watching!!

Alot of people have reviewed this badly, which I think is unfair. If you go to watch this film and try to see it as a serious action film, then don't bother. Escape From L.A. should be seen as pure FUN, something missing from most of the action genre. As soon as you realize that this is a satire of the genre then you appreciate it for what it really is. Entertainment. Think "From Dusk Till Dawn" and you'll be on the same page. Yes the effects are bad. If you cant see Snake surfing a tidal wave in the middle of L.A. as taking the mickey, then God help you. Another reviewer commented on "bad acting" even though you have Pam Grier, Steve Buscemi, Kurt Russell and a whole host of others. Its just the style of the film. If what you want is gore, guns, blatant sexism, tongue in cheek humor and ... Read More:

DVD : Immortal Beloved [1995]
The title of the film relates to a letter sent by Beethoven to a lady with whom he had fallen in love. But the name of that lady is unknown and this mystery has long fascinated Beethoven scholars. Many have been the names put in the frame. Bernard Rose, who wrote as well as directed this movie, presents his theory. Is it Giuletta Giucciardi, Countess Gallenberg, or Anna-Marie, Countess Erdody, or Johanna Reiss, his sister-in-law?

There is so much that is wrong with this film - for example, its historical inaccuracies; the lack of consistency in accents; and the use of hilly Prague to portray flat Vienna. Watching this film I was often confronted with the crass, the artless, the preposterous, the embarrassing, and the laughable. We have comedy with Barry Humphries as Metternich, ... Read More:

Whilst not in the same class as "Rome", this film nevertheless fills out Caesar's early life in an interesting way and with reasonable accuracy. The film boasts superb performances from Richard Harris and Chris Walken. The central character is also performed with skill except that he doesn't do a lot of ageing throughout the 30+ years of the drama.

Don't, however, purchase this version - it has been drastically cut for some perverse reason by over 40 minutes from the version transmitted on BBC. The region 1 version is the one to get, it is full length, and if I was reviewing this one I would give it three, maybe four stars.

If you like listening to endless pieces of music and watching films with very little dialogue then this is the one for you, this has got them both in abundance!!

I don't recall hearing about it, but there must have been an international strike the year that this was made as this is the only reason why Nicholas Cage could have ever won an academy award for acting, he was dire in this film, proving yet again that he simply can not act in a serious film, they gave him very little to say, so they're obviously well aware of his acting ability (which is limited at best).

This film only serves to do two things, if you're an alcoholic and you keep on drinking then there's a chance that you'll drink yourself to death and second that if you're a prostitute/hooker then you'll probably at ... Read More:
