WONDERFULL, I recently saw it on the big screen and even though I'd seen it many times before it is one of my favourite films, well into the Top 5. The only slight concern is that no way would the pretty Jean Simmons have turned into Valery Hobson. John Mills was very good but a little weedy compared to the excellent boy who played him as a young Pip. Finlay Currie was fantastic, so scary & even though he was a 'very naughty boy' we still like him, especially when he turns up on Pip's door one wet & windy night after his disappearing act , brurrr!
So if you buy the DvD you'll not be disappointed, if you are then you is without soul or heart, 'Dear Boy!'.

This is a highly entertaining black comedy about an illegitimate heir (Dennis Price) who tries to bump off eight relatives (all played by Alec Guinness) who stand in the way of him becoming a Duke. It's a very clever story with an imaginative twist at the end. Guinness is brilliant in his galaxy of roles.

There is no other word to describe it. I am talking about both the unbelievebly bargain price and the magnificence of the films.
To get it out of the way, 'Tale of Two Cities' is only very good. It is not one of the best Dickens stories (but it is still Dickens), and it is not directed by David Lean, however Dirk Bogarde still does extremely well and it is enjoyable.

Right, now we come to the masterpieces: these are certainly two of the greatest top 100 movies ever made, in anyone's list, in mine both are top 20. As far as I am concerned, if you start off with a great story then you will have a good film. What these two films add is acting so brilliant that it could persuade you to alter your sexuality if it so desired, and direction ... Read More:

The film itself: Fabulous rendition of the classic by Charles Dickens. John Mills plays the part with elegance and style. Great.

Quality: Compared to a normal DVD this Blu Ray disk is very crisp. However (not a bad thing), if you are familiar with photography jargon, the film appears to be shot with a very high ISO throughout. But worth getting the Blue Ray version.

The Voice of Merrill made in 1952 is an interesting melodrama with atmospheric photography by Monty Berman and it is one of the early Tempean productions (Robert S Baker & Monty Berman) and was made for around £20,000. See Odeon Entertainments release Blackout also from Tempean.
The stars are Valerie Hobson towards the end of her movie career, Edward Underdown still a star name in British films at the time and James Robertson Justice and there are lots of other well known faces too...including Garry Marsh and Sam Kydd.
The incidental music by Frank Cordell adds to the early 1950s feel and this film has much more of a first feature impact about it. Music was always an important part of a Tempean film and more often than not it was Stanley ... Read More:

Tried all over the place to get the 2 disc Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein, and eventually gave up and ordered this instead. Bit of a risk this, because the 2-disc extras looked so good, and they aren't mentioned in the product details, but happily, when it arrived, it included the same extras as that edition. I suppose you wouldn't expect Universal to do completely new pressings, but it's nice to find out they haven't. Obviously, "Son of Frankenstein" (and "Ghost of Frankenstein" for that matter) would have been preferable to "House of Frankenstein" in such a set, but then if I wanted all the Universal stuff I'd be going for the Universal Monsters Legacy set anyway. All-in-all, a good way to get hold of the original, and arguably the best, two Frankenstein ... Read More:

Amusing and entertaining movie starring a surprisingly good-looking Alec Guinness as an enterprising and innovative young man whose business ventures never seem to fail - despite the avarice Ruth Earp (Glynis Johns) he appears to woo, but she is far busier social-climbing for ever much grander titles, and ends up falling for the dashing 'Lord'! (Wilfred Hyde-White)

Also stars Petula Clark, Valerie Hobson, Michael Hordern and Joan Hickson.

Bride of Frankenstein is one, if not THE best, Universal horror movie made in their golden era of the 1930's. A direct sequel to Frankenstein, but in nearly every way a better movie. This is a much more artistic work. Sure there is still some hammy acting and the not so special effects are, by comparison to today laughable.

However, as a movie, this has many things that most modern horror films lack. The cinematography is marvellous. There are dozens of moments in the film where I wished I could have stopped the DVD and taken a copy of the image on the screen. No more so than near the end when the bride appears. The lighting in this scene combined with the photography produces a marvellous almost surreal effect. It also has a few moments of great pathos, ... Read More:

DVD : Ealing Comedy DVD Collection - The Ladykillers/Kind Hearts and Coronets/The Lavender Hill Mob/The Man in the White Suit [1955]

This is a wonderful Ealing collection with four favourites to enjoy:

The Ladykillers (1955) - It never really got any better than this at Ealing - a comedy masterpiece. Loads of entertainment value here, from the gang of crooks posing as a string quartet, to the wonderfully dotty little old lady with a vivid imagination and a noisy parrot. Lots of nice little cameos here too (including Frankie Howerd as a frustrated barrow-boy). The casting is just perfect, including an outrageously disguised Alec Guinness as "The Professor", a "wide boy" Peter Sellers and a gangsterish Herbert Lom. The story is excellent and it's all in colour.

Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) - A highly entertaining black comedy about an illegitimate heir (Dennis Price) who ... Read More:

DVD : Unpublished Story [1942]
An English journalist just back from Dunkirk writes a story blasting a London-based peace-in-our-time organization, but the story is killed by a government agency. Are there Nazi sympathizers or just cautious bureaucrats in the agency? Is the peace group led by innocent dupes or by ruthless Nazi agents? The reporter intends to find out.

The movie isn't A-list, but it's better than a programer. It's a craftsman-like piece of work. In feature roles are two first-rate British character actors, Roland Culver (The Pallisers, Dead of Night) and Miles Malleson (Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Man in the White Suit)

The DVD transfer is surprisingly good considering the age of the movie and that it was never considered a classic
