This is a quite lovely DVD that rightly places Onegin at the heart of the opera, when frequently the whole focus is on Tatiana. While the latter is understandable given the importance of the Letter Scene to the drama of the work - and it was the musical kernel around which the recurring motifs of the opera are based - by focussing so centrally on Onegin himself the final scenes pack a real punch.

The staging is minimalist, the action taking place within the huge white cube of the bare Metropolitan stage, with no scenery. The different scenes are picked out by the simple use of a few judicious pieces of stage furniture - a single table for the opening scene in the Larin's garden, a bed and bureau for Tatiana's room and so on - ... The build up and witnesses to the performance of the Seventh Symphony in Leningrad brings tears into ones eyes. Death, starvation sheer Hell! - yet intense love of music in the face of it all. Brings it all home to you with vivid realism! This documentary has sharpend the intensity of feelings I have when listening to any of the many Shostakovich works I already know. I now know why the little old ladies flock to the concert hall in the former Soviet Union when Shostakovich is played!

DVD : Russian Ark [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Russian Ark has been promoted as a milestone in cinema history, as the first movie to have been made in a single shot. Sokurov uses his tour of the Heritage in Saint Petersburg (seat of the Czars from Peter the Great to the Bolshevik revolution) to show us his take on Russian history. The camera moves from room to room and we see Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, we see the son of the Shah of Persia apologizing to the Czar for an attack on the Russian embassy in Tehran, we see a magnificent ball in 1913, and so on. It's a technical tour de force, and it's a beautiful movie to watch. Yet, there's a shallow heart in it, since there's not much to read in it except Sokurov's nostalgia for Russia's imperial past (nothing wrong there, it's Sokurov's prerogative ... Read More:

Now, why would anyone settle for 'Les Misérables', when they could havethe real thing, Prokofiev's 'War & Peace', instead? One of life'smysteries, if you ask me. There is nothing in 'Miz' that 'W&P' doesn'thave to an even more staggering degree, pathos, spectacle, drama, entertainment ... melody!
Prokofiev originally wanted to concentrate his efforts on the central lovestory from Tolstoy's monumental work, but Stalin, who pestered Prokofievabout the opera until both died on the exact same day in 1953, insisted onthe Russian people being depicted in a grandiose, patriotic fashion, andeven carved out a role that was supposed to be a portrait of himself,Stalin as brilliant military strategist.
And it works. Brilliantly even. The choruses have a raw, primeval ... Read More:

DVD : Valery Gergiev Conducts The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra [2000]
Being relatively new to the world of classical music - I had no idea what the music contained on this DVD was like. All I knew was that I can't get enough of the fearsome interpretations created by the great Valery Gergiev.

The three pieces of music all have something in common - their quiet, subdued passion. They are all like a young girl, hiding away her inner most thoughts - sometimes happy, sometimes frightened, sometimes light, sometimes dark. The highlight for me was the Viola concerto - Yuri Bashmet controls the emotions of this piece as though it was he who had composed it. It is as though he is pulling at some dark, despairing memory and with every note pulls it out of his being - performing an exorcism of something that has nearly torn him apart... ... Read More:

Despite my bad English, I'd like to say something about this DVD. Excellent! Good staging and costumes (based on the original first performance), great singers and good italian pronunciation, and a very strong performance of the director, Valery Ghergjev. Absolutely fantastic.

A snapshot of one of the great conductors of our time, the charismatic Valeri Gergiev. His choice, as the centrepiece, of Prokofiev's Scythian Suite, far less familiar to audiences than The Rite of Spring, gives us an insight not only into a piece that can be just 'mere noise' in the hands of lesser conductors, but into Gergiev's ability to communicate with musicians and audiences outside his native Russia.

In the extended rehearsal sequence he painstakingly develops Prokofiev's delicate scoring depicting the mysteries of Scythian religion, while not stinting with the visceral excitement of the clashing discords in the work's closing bars (more 'barbaric' than the conclusion to the Rite??).

The visual material provided here is good also - note ... Read More:

DVD : Parsifal - The Search For The Grail
Tony Palmer's 1998 documentary on Wagner's final opera is something of a disappointment. It is subtitled "The Search for the Grail", but a good two-thirds of the DVD is largely a retelling of the story by a re-enactment of the opera itself, Parsifal mainly (but not always) portrayed by Placido Domingo, who narrates throughout the documentary. Since most people who would have bought this DVD would presumably already be aware of the opera's story, it is difficult to understand at whom this is aimed. Wagner lovers will already know the story and the music; and those who did not know it would be confused. Besides, this DVD tells little that is new. What is left accounts for about thirty minutes. If I wanted to experience a performance of the opera, then I would buy a performance ... Read More:
