She: Suicidal, about to jump off a bridge. He: A carnival knife thrower. Would you like to be my target, he asks. Sounds like a match made in heaven.

Patrice Leconte's La Fille sur le Ponte may be a bit of quirky romantic fluff, but its great fluff. It's a diverting entertainment without much purchase, thank goodness, for the admiration of deeper meanings with which some Anglo cinephiles deaden the experience of good French movies.

It's the story of two people who probably could only exist in the movies. Adele (Vanessa Paradis) is 21, endlessly compliant and endlessly unlucky in love (and with just about everything else, too.) She's a charming gamin, especially if you're the guy trying to pick her up. "Boys attract ... Read More:

Vanessa Paradis debut acting performance is both exceptionally well performed and also crushingly beautifully played. She is cast as Mathilde Tessier who at first appears to be a lazy student hell bent on skipping class. When her teacher takes her under his wing to try and get to the route of the problem he finds himself drawn in by both her mystique and charisma. The affair begins and Mathilde's desperate situation becomes more and more apparant. When Francois' wife becomes aware of the dalliance she demands that it comes to an end.
Thus begins the prolonged and agonising ending in which Mathilde self destructs and Francois realizes that he will never love like he loved her. Sounds cliched but the presence of Paradis and her truly startling ... Read More:

Vanessa Paradis adds a charismatic presence to this absorbing film, which lives up to the best French cinema traditions. Depardieu is excellent too - as always. Elisa combines bits of light entertainment (such as the amusing shop-scam scene) with depth. As it nears the end, the possible outcomes become intriguing. There are a couple of subtleties I have not yet fathomed, despite two viewings, but I shall look forward to watching it yet again.

For those who recall the beauty and sheer genius of Delicatessen and Betty Blue this film has buckets of nostalgia for both (not surprising as the Producer was involved with both). An interesting premise sets up the narrative in a.n.other world and you follow the lives of two different people brought together through the oddest of circumstances both seeking different but mutually compatible things.

Scored brilliantly with music from Elvis at the beginning to a haunting Tom Waits at the end this film has much to be recommend and much to enjoy. Both Vanessa and Vincent shine in a wonderfully french film.
