"Bourbon, straight, with a bourbon chaser." That's Johnny Morrison's drink. Johnny's just been discharged from the Navy, along with two of his pals who were under his command. There's George Copeland (Hugh Beaumont), easy going and loyal, and Buzz Wancheck (William Bendix), big and burly, just as loyal to Johnny as George is, with a metal plate in his head, a variable memory and who sometimes goes into rages.

Johnny leaves his two pals in a Los Angeles hotel and goes to The Cavendish Court in the evening to meet his wife, Helen (Doris Dowling). The Cavendish is a high priced hotel with private bungalows, a careless attitude about parties and an aging security man who doesn't mind taking a few under-the-table dollars for various ... I'm sorry but I have to disagree with the only other reviewer of this film.
To me its what was known in the U.K. many years ago as a "B" film, yes your right Ladd wasn't much of an actor but then come to that neither was Lake they both seemed wooden and why film going audiences considered Lake a star I don't know she wasn't even good looking! The only decent actor in it was Bendix maybe because he had an easy part to play a "psycho".I just kept waiting for him to say "its that monkey music".The film itself well two guys have a thing for each other one the boss the other the hit guy ,they also have a thing for a woman (Lake) who plays both along, lots of corruption as I suppose was common in those days in America. A few fights a bit ... Read More:

If this was the first Steve Martin film I had ever seen I would have missed some of his really good ones because I wouldn't have bothered with any others. I thought the only good thing about it was the way old films were so cleverly used to bring in many old stars that only a granny like me would recognise. This one wont be watched again.

This is a straight-forward, linear, quick-moving story based on a much more interesting book. But it's still an entertaining movie, and probably close to required viewing if you enjoy noir and/or Forties movies.

Raven (Alan Ladd) is a hired killer, evidently without remorse or nerves, who is paid to knock off a blackmailer. The blackmailer was trying to take to the cleaners a corrupt industrialist who was coincidentally helping the enemy. (This is during WWII.) However, Raven is paid in counterfeit bills on the assumption the police will catch him when he spends the money. He discovers the plot and decides to take out the guy who hired him and the fellow, the industrialist, who was behind it all.

The movie bills Veronica Lake ... Read More:

I thought it went without saying that this is one of the most positive and entertaining films from a period with a cliched embarrassment of riches but I see it gets only a three star review.
Quiet undeserved.
See it for yourself and you won't fail to want to be more generous as the spirit of the film persuades your stingy spirit to loose the hold of meanness: that last reviewer was of a mind to give it only one star as he began writing - see what the spirit can do?

DVD : This Gun for Hire [1942] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Shocking blonde Veronica Lake with the famous peek-a-boo hairdo covering her right eye and the equally diminutive Alan Ladd were Paramount's version of Warner's Bogart & Bacall. The poor man's Bogie & Bacall, as it were.

'This Gun for Hire', based on the Graham Greene classic 'A Gun for Sale', was always a favourite film noir of mine, even though Hollywood tried to make Greene's anti-hero more palatable by changing his hare-lip into a deformed wrist. It is still quite an astonishingly desillusioned look at society and man's chances at survival, and the film easily holds up with the greatest of Warner's classics of the time. This new (and first) DVD edition lovingly recreates the gorgeous B&W cinematography with wonderful texture to make ... Read More:

DVD : Preston Sturges: The Filmmaker Collection (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This is a great collection of films by a comedy genius.

Sadly the transfer done by Universal is muddy, without contrast and grainy. In fact, it was so bad, (and far worse than any of the other 40's films in my collection), that I had to ask myself if this was a pirated print!

By comparing this collection to original videotapes of the same films as well as off-air tapings from the Studio Universal channel, one can see that this collection simply did not receive the quality transfer treatment that was truly merited.

What a shame. Preston Sturges deserved better.
