Insp.North (Kate Buffery) was a totally credible charactrer as a police officer just like Jane Tennison. Unfortunately her replacement, Victoria Smurfit is quite beyond belief. She has no credibility whatsoever as a polce officer (in episodes 7 and above).

She spoils an outstanding series - Don't bother with the more recent short episodes..

After watching the Angela Lansbury version, ( and NOT yet having read the book) this was most disappointing. Total shock when the credits rolled - DUH what happened next???

I am not sure if this follows the classic novel accurately but it is an adult series set in the 12th century that kept me watching until the end. The story was well acted and the scenes brilliantly done. Even the costumes and surroundings were relatively accurate (no biros or aircraft scooting across the sky, or zips!!) This is a magnificent effort by the BBC.
It only has one minor drawback and that is the sound track, whilst it is not as dominant as I thought it would be, still has its moments of corny sound effects. It is an adult version of Ivanhoe so I resent the children's television soundtrack that occasionally came in but that is a very minor annoyance. I think sound engineers go into withdrawal if there is just dialogue. Anyway, ... Read More:

Tibetan Buddhism is a pure betrayal of Buddhism, of Buddha himself. It dares go beyond Buddha's teaching and reinvent a divinity of some kind where Buddha had taught there could not be any God anywhere. The great force that leads the universe in the eternal cycle from birth to rebirth via decay and death is transmuted into some kind of prophecy about some kind of truth to keep against human greed in order to save the world, and that truth is entrusted to one person who remains beyond aging, will not decay in other words, for as long as he will carry this trust and responsibility. When the time has come he will have to transmit his responsibility to the newly elected person who fulfills the three prophecies and the guardian will finally age and take ... Read More:

This film is fantastic. It is very unpredictable, just like life. The characters are eccentric but as the story slowly unfolds, you gain understanding and sympathy for them. This is not a horror film at all. It has suspense, love, surprises, rock and roll, and a vein of tragedy running through it.

The film seems to emphasise a message that you cannot judge situations and people as they might first appear. It also has several other messages about the value of life which are hinted at, but not imposed on the audience.

What a great series! I had never before seen it on television and, loving period pieces as I do, decided to make the purchase. It was worth every penny! My sister, who also loves period pieces, came over. Together we hunkered down and proceeded to watch the entire series in one sitting, all eight and a half hours of it. We were positively riveted to the screen, so engrossing and well acted is the series.

The series centers around three young woman, Mattie, Lydia, and Hannah, brought by fate to posh Berkeley Square in turn of the twentieth century London. All three work in households where they are employed as nannies. All three meet and become fast friends.

Mattie is an experienced nanny, who was brought up in the tough East End of London and, ... Read More:
